BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

80Mbps fibre broadband pilot phase in February

I was hoping all of us on the current 40/10 service would get a free upgrade....

I think reading the article that this is for FTTP service not FTTC.

All that BT have been waiting for is OFCOM to approve the use of the higher bandwidth frequency's and make sure that they do not radiate RF Interference across the HF Radio spectrum as they are using frequency's upto 15Mhz bandwidth. This has had to be checked to avoid problems with the widely used RF Spectrum for Radio Comms

Well, looks as though port forwarding on the HH3 is actually broken and BT haven't fixed it yet for some reason.

Another question though - I know someone interested in going Infinity but I was wondering if BT state in writing somewhere that they will guarantee a certain download and upload speed if you subscribe? No point in paying extra at BT if they can't basically.

I think it's 15mbps which they promise, anything below is faulty.

The real question is weather or not the 80/20 will be offered as a free upgrade to existing customers OR weather its going to be a new product offered at a higher price???

If its a free upgrade that's great and offer the 80/20 at 40/10 prices to ALL new customers I think that will get a greater uptake and offer better returns for BT in the long term.

Ok, im using a private bit torrent site. I am in the middle of a freeleech right now. I am getting great speeds. Are my upload and download speeds combined greater than the 40mb speeds BT provides?

Slightly extreme question now:

Does anyone know of a 3rd party router that both supports the protocol the white modem box is using AND has built in powerline support?

An example of a powerline supporting router is D-link DHP-1565.

A strange thing to want to know, but...

No, your combined upload and download is roughly 38.4mb/sec (((919.7/1024) + 3.9) * 8).

Having spoke to BT engineers who live by me they reckon 100 down using FTTC will be a given for those who live near the cab in the not too distant future and that this will be the same as the normal 40 package on offer, the reason being that the 100 down speed is needed to help the average speed promise given by the government. It is basically offsetting those who not be getting Infinity.

Interesting that I have so many BT engineers who live by me and yet my city is the one that has been left out the most in the UK lol...

Zen have already stated 80/20 FTTC service will be a more expensive product.

I may think about moving from Zen if that is the case. However, it does depend on the price point. I'll have to see if work need anyone for testing 80/20 service once FTTC is enabled in my area.

Well I have the 40/10 UNLIMITED Business package fitted 22nd December and its great. All the problems with ADSL2+ have gone EG lagging on games and net slow when PS3, Xbox360, and 3 PC's are running all at the same time. And as for uploading FTP files to the works server WOW takes no time at all now.

So as for the 80/20 upgrade for free I am with BT so I will just wait and see what I get offered (if anything) as and when is becomes available to users.

Well, you're assuming that BT will offer it for free. I can't see why they would offer it free, it's BT we're talking about.

Anywho, if it's a silly price point with Zen I probably won't pay for it; 40/10 is great, 80/20 would be a nice bonus... Probably pay a tenner or £5 more a month for it, but there's no chance I'm moving to BT for 80/20, don't trust them :)

I wasnt in at the time when BT rang my house on Friday. They spoke to my sister who told me they said that there had been some complanints in the area abou slow speed, and that they want to change my modem.

This I found puzzling, as there is nothing wrong with my modem or network speed.

Sounds a little bit fishy to me.

Not so much, BT are changing the old modems that was installed prior to a certain date and they had issues with them.
