BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I have been given this information on the BT Infinity forum by a member on how to bypass the p2p throttling BT induce at certain times using uTorrent. Initial testing by other users say it does work. Here it is:

Options > Preferences

"Connection"
> Click "Randomize port each start", ensure all four boxes here are ticked.

"Bandwidth"
> Tick "Alternate upload rate when not downloading".
> Maximum Upload Rate should be ~ 1/2 of your actual upstream bandwidth. I.e. if you have a 1Mbit upstream you would have a theoretical maximum throughput of 128Kbyte/sec, so in here you would enter 64 (It's in KB, not Kb)
> Altername upload rate when not downloading should be ~ 2/3 of your actual upstream bandwidth, so again assuming 1Mbit upstream, you'd enter 85
> "Global Rate Limit Option" - ensure none of these three boxes are ticked
> "Number of Connections" - Global: 256. Per Torrent: 64. Upload slots: 8. Tick "Use additional if under 90%"

"BitTorrent"
> "Basic BitTorrent Features" - ensure all boxes are ticked except "Enable Bandwidth Management" and "Limit local peer bandwidth"
> "Protocol Encryption" - Outgoing: Forced. Allow incoming legacy connections: Ticked.

"Advanced"
> "bt.transp_disposition" - increase to 255 and click "Set"
> "net.max_halfopen" - ensure this is set to 100

I've set this up now, except the DHT Network due to where I'm getting my stuff from it's a bad idea.

The only question I have is the fact that I run this on my server, so I guess if I'm getting low speeds a simple client restart will just randomize the port and I'll be good to go again?

Oh and to all skeptical of the speeds on Infinity, I've never got less than the full 38+Mbit, never had down time either in the 5 months we've had it so far.

Oh and btw I've just done this, restarted uTorrent and added a couple of things, instant 4.1Mb/s :)

Let me guess. The "other forum" is the Infinity section of BT Community forums?

I saw that guys post and it doesn't work.

EDIT: Actually, I may have misunderstood that. Does usage between midnight and eight not contribute to your data usage?

On plusnet, no, you can download as much as you want. I always used to set me downloads for 12.01am to start.

Just noticed this for the top package.

** Plusnet Extra Fibre Broadband & Anytime calls: If you live in a low cost area it costs £24.99 a month. If you live outside one of these areas it costs £24.99 a month for the first three months, then £31.49 a month.

Low cost area ??

Thing I hated about Plusnet was they change the package content/name and pricing but dont tell existing customers. Did it to me three times and was with Plusnet when they used to be Force9 !

eg I was paying £19.99 and unbeknowns to me they relabelled my package and reduced it same usage etc to £14.99 but didnt tell me. Only found out by accident looking at their webpage, paying over the odds for about 6 months.

They did that kind of thing 3 times.

Yep, I used to use a Netscreen 5GT with mine but now I'm using an SRX210.

Very nice. How do you find it? I am guessing its a simple PPPoE connection, I have been looking at ether re-using my old Cisco 1841 or getting a SSG5.

Yeah on the SSGs it's just a case of binding a PPPoE instance to the interface. Username (for BT) is [email protected] and password is anything you like. It's that simple :)

IP Profile for your line is -38995 Kbps
Download speedachieved during the test was - 36134 Kbps

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 2012 Kbps
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20000 Kbps

I can't seem to push the upload over the usual 8-8.5Mb/s at the moment. I'm waiting for confirmation from my ISP that my line is now using the new 80/20 profile.

Looking at the SRX models mind, it does looks a massive improvement over the ScreenOS interface.

My BT Infinity went in today - got the full speed as well, apparently - will test later! :D

Oh, and ugh! ScreenOS! Using a flavour of JunOS is a huge improvement, and the NSM is actually quite nice these days if you're that way inclined (shame it isn't free).

This is while someone else is watching Youtube in the other room so assume this takes a little bit off the total.

It feels so much snappier, and I'm not getting punished for downloading stuff off Steam anymore. Hurrah!

Well my ping has just tripped to all uk servers, I'm pinging London at 7ms then back to Manchester then back down to London again.
