BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Which router?
Tried a direct connection to the modem?
What is the downstream IP profile?

Router is a somewhat dodgy sounding Buffalo Airstation WCR-GN

Just tried a direct connection to the modem and got similar speeds to that I get by going via the router (tonight that's around 25mbps)

You could also try a different patch cable to the pc. Have you got a 2nd pc or laptop that you could use to make sure it isn't the LAN port on your pc?

Yeah tried a different CAT5 cable yesterday on a whim, made no difference. Tried it on both my laptops and there's definitely not a problem with either of those

Yeah upstream isn't amazing for some reason but as long as I have enough to ack what I'm downloading it doesn't bother me. I don't host anything, don't do p2p. It may improve as apparently this has a "settling in period" (I presume *DSL profiling). The package is the 40Gb/s Unlimited with up to 10Mb/s upstream.

EDIT: Hmm I wonder if they haven't provisioned it properly. I'll give them a call tomorrow as I changed my order.

EDIT2: Grrr they've provisioned option 1 - I'll get that sorted.

So they have removed 300GB limit then and it is now truely unlimited?

I was told there is no cap on option 2. I calculated that I'll probably download about 40-60GBytes a month.

Just wondering if most are going with Bt themselves as a provider or regional providers? I'm in Belfast and UTV are offering a deal similar to BT but with a 2 year contract! Surely by then we'll see 1 month rolling contracts come in.

On that note, anyone have a vague idea when this might happen? I hate being tied into a long contract, even BT is an 18 month contract?

I'm near the end of my IDNet contract (March) and can hardly wait. Whats the point in having a 40Mb line when you've a peak allowance of 30MB? Apart from downloading (I don't game so pings don't interest me) there isn't much difference in a 2Mb line in my eyes.

Unlocked the modem just then, 5 minute job :) Max downsteam around 102mb and upstream around 27mb. Disabled QoS and upload jumped from 8mb to 9mb straight away. Any other tweaks for speed or ping etc?

They removed the FUP 10 months ago, it has never had a 'limit' or 'cap' they just reduced your speed to 2Mb/s if you ever went over the FUP, no charges per MB etc and you could use the internet as normal, just at a slower rate.

Not impressed, 1 week after my Infinity install and the Openreach modem has died. Tried swapping the crappy adapter for a spare, still no power. The box has no marks or smell of frizzled components, it still has the new freshly boxed scent. I guess I have to call BT to arrange an engineer to come and plug it in because it's complicated to fit

Well my service is being regraded and I will have a rebate to ensure I got the deal I asked for - they were pretty good actually on the phone. I'll run those tests once I'm put on to the correct service.

Now they just have to get someone back round to fix the god-awful exterior cabling that the lazy OpenReach engineer did (he re-used previous cabling which had been cut and wasn't long enough, so I now have a 45 degree guitar string from just below my roof to the guttering on the bay window! And no, I wasn't home when he did this. :/

Just spoke to BT India and was advised that there's a problem at my exchange that's preventing the modem getting power... right

I'll get a call from Openreach in the next 24/48 hours, estimated fix date on my account is Wednesday 15th! I just need a new modem ffs

Not being funny, but have you tried plugging in a lamp or something into the socket to make sure it works?

I have an extra bt business fiber modem still sealed because BT sent me two. Not sure if i can sell it or not because sometimes they ask for it back.

I have downloaded quite a lot now.

Ntop graph, just shows ssh :D

Don't worry it always pays to check :D

And to answer, yes the HH3 and modem are in the same double socket. I swapped them around when I first found the fault, the HH3 powered on fine and the modem did not. Also tried the modem in various other sockets, I've taken it to work and asked one of my techies to have a poke around :p

Don't want to create a whole new thread but does anyone know how to disable JUST the wireless connection on the BT Home Hub? I've gone into the settings but theres no tick or option where I can disable it? My son is playing way to much Xbox live!
