BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BT improving their profiles for free?

Got this last night

We're increasing the speed of your BT Infinity: At the moment, you're getting a maximum speed of up to 38Mb. We're making that even faster by increasing it to up to 52Mb. You don't need to do anything – we'll simply let you know when it's done.

My line rated at max 55 so should be interesting

Welcome to Virgin Media's world - they've been increasing speeds "for free" for the past 15 years yet keep pushing the prices up - you pay for it one way or the other eventually :)

My VM progression has gone 512k, 768k, 1m, 2m, 4m, 10m, 20m, 30m, 60m, 100m, 200m and all but the last of those has been a "free speed upgrade". That said, I was paying way more for 512k originally than I pay for 200m now so can't complain really :)

Telecoms operator BT has revealed the technical capabilities for their forthcoming pilot of “ultrafast” 300-500Mbps G.fast technology (consumer ISP products should start at 160Mbps), which will be rolled out to cover 25,000 premises in Cambridgeshire and Kent this summer.

BT currently plans to make the new G.fast (aka – GEA-NGA2 G.fast or ITU G.9700/9701) service available to 10 million premises by 2020, with “most of the UK” likely to be done by 2025 (this probably equates to around 60% UK coverage). Initially G.fast will only offer top download speeds of ‘up to’ 300Mbps (50Mbps upload), before later increasing to 500Mbps.

The full commercial roll-out is due to begin next summer (2017), but before that BT intends to conduct one last large-scale customer pilot and this will give us a good idea of what the final pricing and product setup should look like. In keeping with that BT has now published a new technical document (SIN 520) that offers some useful insights into the final service design.

The new pilots (12,500 premises in each location), which will be conducted in Cherry Hinton (Cambridgeshire) and Gillingham (Kent), follow the previous trials in parts of Swansea (Wales), Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire) and Gosforth (Newcastle). The pilot will come in two product flavours (still subject to change before the commercial roll-out), as below.

My contract was due to end this Tuesday and they've just sent me an email informing me of the upcoming price increases, and of an offer to renew my Infinity 1 contract for £10 a month (I was paying £12.50).

They also offered Infinity 2 for £17.50, but I can only get 20mb down here.

How do i go about trying to get that deal? been with bt for around 4 years now, do i just call them and ask them? I got a email saying they were offering me a special deal with the price hykes i clicked the link and it came up with £28 a month for 18 months... bit of a pee take if they are offering people the same thing for more then £10 less!

Wow, that's a rubbish offer considering I too got a £10pm (12m contract) offer despite not even being a customer for a year yet. I'd call them, you'll need to do the usual "I want to leave because I'll get a better deal elsewhere" thing though.

Just called them, the guy said that "the 10 a month and 17.50 a month offer was a mistake, and the offer has been recalled, and the ones that were offered it were still honored that price but cant give it to anyone else"

He said the best deal he could offer was 12 month contract at £28 a month for infinity 2, or £22 a month for 24 month, or £22 a month for infinity 1 for 12 months. Told him i wanted to cancel, didn't seem bothered lol

I just renewed my contract with infinity 1 unlimited, BT sent me an offer as my years offer was almost up.

BT reduced the price to £10 a month and upped the speed to the 52 meg that new customers get and the 100 gig of cloud storage for what thats worth!

I did that on Sunday last (2 days ago) and its been updated today. I am getting about 51.something on some of the speed test servers one of the test servers for some reason bounces at about 160 meg !! i asume thats a bug.

Me too fella and it's been fault free.

I've just signed up for a Sky TV package including unlimited fibre broadband, but now I'm wondering if I should have gone with BT instead. BT would be very slightly cheaper but is 52Mb/s instead of Sky's 38Mb/s. Thing is at my house the estimated actual speed is showing as 33Mb/s so would it make any difference anyway?

My contract expires next month. Do bt do retentions?
I could get a better deal if I cancelled and went down the cashback route I'm sure but it's Hassle.

Sounds like rubbish to me, my offers page still shows it!

Told my sister to ring today, she has been paying £29 odd for infinity 2 for the last 2 yrs.

Told her about the leaflet for infinity 1 unlimited for £10 a month for 12 months, which came through our door last week.

The guy on the phone said oh yes, you can either have that for £10 a month or infinity 2 for 24 months at £18.50.

She chose the £10 deal, she is saving £290 a year, as she was paying line rental monthly and being charged for caller id, she is so happy at the saving.

Not bad to say she never had a leaflet.

On her account before she rang, the offers bit didnt even show up, like it did on mine.

Anyone having issues with watching Youtube vids? I have fantastic download speeds, low ping but when I try and watch a YT vid, it starts ok and then maybe 30 seconds into the video it stops playing and buffers for a few minutes, then starts playing again as if nothing had happened. Happens consistently in all browsers. Any ideas folks?
