BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Honestly, if you have Openreach FTTP available, it's an easy decision unless you consume the TV services such as Sky Sports etc which Virgin Media can offer. Virgin can be a gamble internet wise as to whether there is local area congestion.

As for the price increase, this would be the annual April time increase, and unrelated to FTTP being rolled out.
You make a fair point there. :)

if somebody has PSTN line rental with BT and ADSL with Eclipse and is going to move to FTTP (ditching the land line), will they need to manually cancel the PSTN/ADSL once the new service is installed? I wasn't sure if the new provider (probably PlusNet or Zen) would cease the old service or not given they don't have either of the old services.

It's been very difficult to buy FTTC without line rental included for close to six years now. The reason why FTTC (SOGEA) pricing might go up when you have FTTP available is because ISPs want you to move to FTTP.

Wait about three months until your contract runs out and then buy the 150Mbps Plusnet service for £25, if you're happy with speeds.
I checked out the speeds earlier and the Full Fibre 300 package looks like possibility.

Plenty of time between now and July to compare other suppliers. :)

I was invited for a next-gen broadband trial by BT/EE. Presumably it’s for some XGS-PON service.

I guess there’s no way of knowing without signing up if they’ll install a separate ONT for this, or upgrade my existing one? I really don’t want any more holes drilled or cables run along the wall.

What happens with my Plusnet contract? Does it just continue as-is as if nothing happened?

It will be an ONT swap so your Plusnet contract will die off. EE probably have a way of making sure you don't pay any ETF.

Which part of the country are you in? The XGS-PON trial area was around Surrey originally.

Olilo is very good package with Openreach FTTP 900/110 @ £36.99 a month (12 months contract) (AllPoints Fibre Backhaul) via consumer order online https://consumer.olilo.co.uk/
If you have top cashback etc, and don't mind the faff, then I very recently got EE's 1600/115 FTTP for an amortised cost of ~£38 a month (24 months)..

I've been running periodic speed tests using Speedtest Tracker and it's exceedingly consistently getting as close to full line speed as I think is possible:

Just got a bit of good this morning. I was trying my luck playing the leaving game and soft signed with Sky. BT called and offered £26.99 for 900mb service. Was paying £57 and out of contract. I got some more petrol money now

Brilliant price that! When was your contract ending? I'm with EE at the moment and my contract is ending on the 18th of June, I tried to renegotiate on a renewal but they wouldn't budge from a little less from what I am paying now which is £45.99.

My contract had ended. Same here in regards to my renewal price, which I think was a pound cheaper than I was already paying.

It’s probably a fluke but what did was go to sky website, check broadband and enter address, choose package and go as far as triggering messages from Bt about sorry to see you go etc. BT gives you a number to phone. I didn’t finish the sky order and phoned bt on that number. Spoke to someone in India. They offered £42.99 and I said I’ll think about it. Bt called me back on 01438 382072 which I thought was spam so ignored it a few times. It was bt retentions and they offered £26.99.

I left BT back in Feb and moved to Vodafone as I just couldn't get them to budge on the price for our 500mbps package! It really shouldn't be that hard to get a good deal ...

I had an email from Vodafone last month offering the 910mbps upgrade for 50p less a month than what we were paying for the 500mbps when we'd signed up! Took the offer and they sorted it in a quick call. Very happy with that considering we were paying nearly £40 at BT for 500!
