So after many years with adsl24 I found out Fibre was available in my area, cause I'm so far from my exchange I was on 1mb for a long time so naturally I was excited about this. To stay with adsl24 I would've needed to pay 40 something quid for installation then another 50 or so for a modem whilst BT provide all this for free so I decided to have BT Infinity installed. Currently getting 37mb down and 7mb up, I do have some concerns though I'd like some of you to address if possible:

1: Torrents, this is my main problem at the min. I've known for a while BT have been well known to throttle people using torrents, I did not quite expect it to be this bad though and it's to the point where I actually think I may have a setting wrong somewhere. During on peak hours I download at 15 kbs and off peak it ranges between 550 kbs and 800 kbs, any one else on BT Infinity getting better results or anyone have any suggestions at all? By the way downloads off websites are absolutely fine, I normally pull down at around 3 or 4mb a sec.

2: Streaming, the loading bar on the likes of youtube or various other players on streaming websites with Fibre I was expecting this to shoot right across and be fully ready to stream in mere seconds with Fibre. It starts out like that (for the first 3 seconds) then it slows way down to a more gradual pace with to be honest isn't a whole lot faster than my past 1mb connection. Anyone else experiencing this?

Those are my only concerns right now, downloading and gaming are perfect can't complain with either. If anybody can shed any light on the above topics though that'd be great.

Cheers.

I've get full download speed on torrents but only when BT decides it's offpeak and there are plenty of seeders. Upload speed is another story, never goes above 130kBps out of a possible 1000kBps. What upload speeds have you seen out of interest? Check your torrent port is open and also speed may vary if your in the initial 10 day training period.

I find that with Youtube too, if I change to a higher quality it'll shoot right up though. I guess youtube could be throttleing the speed, generally you don't need the whole vid loaded straight away. Playback is always smooth though and skipping is near instant even if it hasn't finished loading.

True enough I just checked that on youtube and it responds a lot better to HD quality, goes faster than normal quality weird! In regard to upload speed, right now I'm downloading a torrent 61 seeds and I'm at 400 kbs down and 115 kbs up.

You made the wrong choice migrating to BT if you want to use BitTorrent.

You could try setting your port to 443 and making sure that it's forwarded in your router. You could also try a VPN. Make sure your BitTorrent client is forced to use encryption.

As for streaming, it isn't designed to max your connection and download the entire video in a matter of seconds. The stream will only consume the bandwidth that it needs to play in real time.

What is bt infinity traffic shaping policy ?

drunzer it is not recommend to put your email on a public website because you will get spam. Better to make an image with that information in it, that way spam bots can not scan google for email addresses and find yours.

Groen,

Cheers for that. Their policy is below:

P2P refers to certain applications that enable files and program sharing between groups of people logged on to a P2P network. Because they use uploads and downloads and are often left running 24/7, they consume significant bandwidth, even when being used by just a small number of customers. Because a lot of P2P traffic is not time-critical, eg, downloading TV programmes or movies for later viewing, we treat P2P traffic differently from time-critical traffic (such as surfing, streaming or internet telephony) and apply speed restrictions to all P2P traffic at peak times. We manage these restrictions daily depending on the demands on the network, but typically they will be in place 4pm - midnight on weekdays and 9am - midnight on the weekend.

Which sounds about right being honest with what I'm experiencing, my speed dramatically increases just after midnight. I did know they would throttle on P2P, I just did not expect my speed to be cut as badly as it has been. My own fault really for not doing enough research, I've been on a 1mb connection for years so naturally when I heard Fibre was available I bit on it immediately.
