BT Infinity setup

Hello everyone,

Basically I am thinking of changing to BT infinity, however there are some things I need to clarify first. My BT socket is downstairs and with my current broadband I have my router upstairs with a telephone cable running from the downstairs main socket to it.

How will this work with BT infinity, considering there is an external modem as well? At least I believe there is? All of my devices are upstairs and most are wired, so the router needs to be upstairs really. But is this possible?

Many thanks :D

Openreach will install a filtered faceplate onto your master socket. The equipment is then connected like this:-

Master Socket -> Cat5e Cable -> Modem -> Cat5e Cable -> Router -> Cat5e Cable (or Wi-Fi) -> Computer

The equipment can be located downstairs or upstairs, or even split between them. Ultimately you're going to need a Cat5e cable going upstairs.

Edit:

You may be able to do something with Powerline adapters between the modem and router.

You may also have the option of relocating the master socket.

They'll go through walls if there's a hole ready for them to use. I'm not sure if they'd actually make any holes themselves.

The Openreach engineer that installed mine was very helpful, and worked with me to find a solution that suited me.

Had the same concerns as yourself OP and it would appear to vary depending upon the engineer on the day. The reason being, my parents house only a few doors away were first to get Infinity installed and the BT engineer that arrived that day said he would have to run a new cable upstairs as the original cable was not suitable. Now my elderly parents didn't want this as the house was wired internally and the last thing they wanted was a cable running half way round the house along skirting boards, so it was installed via WiFi downstairs. I was next to get Infinity, my engineer arrived (thats another story!) and I explained my master socket had been moved upstairs a few years ago due to another ISP paying to have it moved. The BT enginner went up and checked, installed Infinity upstairs and didn't even use the new faceplate as my original was basically the same minus the openreach logo stuff on front. He did the tests with his wonder box / meter and I was showing the full speed. Now this is where its hmmm ? My internal wiring / cable is exactly the same as my parents house, the only difference is one engineer would have to move the master socket and one didn't, so read into that how you like mate. Good luck either way my friend :)
