Hello people,

I didn't know where to put this but I hope it will fit in this section :D

I want to upgrade my internet to BT infinity 2 (72 mb/s) but i'm wondering if the speed will split between the devices.

What I mean by that is, if I download something on my PC, will the rest of the devices be unusable because of the very slow internet speed they will get? Or there will be full speed for all devices (my pc is wired to the router and the rest are wireless).

Thanks.

If you download on your PC at 72mbps it will slow things down for the other devices but won't stop them from being able access the internet, you'll just get a slight drop in throughput on the PC as the other devices access the web. In theory all devices can get 72mbps, but not all at the same time, obviously.

You're way more likely to max out the bandwidth of a server your downloading from before your own if you actually get 72Mbps.

Bit of an odd question really though; it's no different to any other internet plan. Your total download bandwidth is shared between all of your devices.

I have it, it load balances basically. You get full 72 if using one device, if you download on that at 7.2mb per second and another device say for example starts streaming Iplayer and that uses 2mbit then the download drops to 7mega bytes per second, if that makes sense. Basically don't worry all, data gets to where it needs to go fast and it maximises the line as best it can without stopping data to one device.

Realistically no servers send me data at my max speed other than steam! Lol :D the issue is now servers cannot send data fast enough, but in general it's great, I'm in a house with a server pc backing up to the cloud on two accounts, about 4-5 pc's, tablets, phones consoles etc and all get data just fine with no buffering :-)

It does share it out yeah, but i would use a download program and just cap it if your worried, thats what i do, same for torrents just cap the download and upload speed if your trying to play games browse etc.

Most of the time i dont have to do anything though, i can be downloading from steam at 9MB a second and still be playing WoW fine. The only time i find i do really need to cap my download speed is when im streaming HD TV or movies, other wise it tends to buffer.

I wasn't expecting so many replies o_o I know it's a silly question but hey, making sure before spending more money. I guess I will go forward and upgrade my broadband to that since you've enlightened me.

I will also try and use the capping thing BluD mentioned in case i drain everything while downloading from Steam.

Main reason I asked this question is because I usually download stuff in the evening when everyone is home but in my house, the Smart TV is used most of the times to watch stuff online such as Netflix or streams which if you don't have enough speed, they will just buffer and stutter all the time (annoying as hell). So I though upgrading to a better broadband will solve the problem.

It certainly does, i havent used my TV antenna in ages, i just stream everything i watch on TV now. Since steam will download as fast as your net will allow you can save a lot of HDD space aswell and just download games when you wanna play them, then delete them if you not playing them for a while.

I dont have a program to cap my steam dowload limit, but if your worried about that just make a thread asking for a program, i used to have a program that let you set up limits for everything using your net, but i forget what it was called. Some one on here will know im sure.

Stay away from BT at the moment. They made changes to their network in some way and its been dreadful for over a month now. Timeouts on webpages and fail to loads galore.
