BT Said That “Basically I Can’t Have MAX…”

A better option (depending on your perspective) might be replacing the DG834 with a router that'll let you either a) fiddle with the target SNR margin or b) cap the maximum sync rate.
The end effect's the same, you get 1Mbps down as before, but you also get the 448kbps upload rate.

Indeed - the Voyager 205 that I have lets you do this, and capping my sync rate solved my problems. The trouble is that I fixed it after I'd asked them to regrade me to a fixed 1Mb speed... meaning I have the crap 256k upload for now :/ I will be changing back to MAX when I can (ie. when F2S pull their finger out) :)

As for the OP, I would be surprised if you could get much more than a stable 1Mb out of your line, with your line attenuation. What you can sync at is irrelevant - I synced at up to 3000kbps and achieved 2.4Mbps download speeds at one point. But my highest 24/7 stable speed without errors is 1Mb.

I was thinking of trying yet another router - any recommendations for my situation :)

I think the only brand I haven't tried now is Speedtouch :D

And Nildram getting interleaving activated on my line wouldn't help me?

My pings atm are around 20-40ms most of the time on BF2, CoD etc.

SW.

Speedtouch is a good idea :) 516 for single port or 546 for 4-port switch.

they replaced the line from the pole to the house and it was all sorted, of course if they test from the pole and its still that bad then your stuffed!
I'm in a new house, so underground cabling afiaik

There are no poles for miles near me...

SW.

find that a little fishy as my attenuation is 53dB, SNR current 9dB and I'm sync'd at 2528kbps with a 2mbit download speed (My SNR drops as low as 3dB :(, but I stay connected at that sync). I'd say from my experience of my awful line you should be able to get 2mbit from the connection

Mind you I have had no end of troubles getting Eclipse to help me out, but they finally did :)

Slightly OT, but whereabouts in Hampshire are you?

Whats your average download speed on a good day, and what does it drop to on a bad day? :)

Turning on interleaving will help reduce the effects of some noise on your line but it won't make any difference to the speed your line can reach due to the poor line quality.

Essentially it may help you maintain a stable connection at around 1Mb on Max so you can still benefit from the increased upload, but it isn't going to help much with the maximum speed.

Also as I hope you know, it will increase your ping times. Can't predict exactly how much, but depending upon the Exchange hardware, generally around 10 - 25ms.

Just to throw this into the loop I have lived in a place where the exchange is about 200 yards away and I was quoted with a speed of 8mbits and on a good day with the wind in the right direction I could get around 12mbits but nearly all the time I only got about 3mbits... My co worker who lives about the same distance from another exchange constantly gets around 16Mbits... BT says there should be no difference...

Not really comparing like with like there though.

If your co worker is getting 16Mb then they are on LLU not Max.

In your case you would need to do a few tests with the BT checker to see if it is an Exchange congestion issue or perhaps an overloaded ISP.

For the last week or so its been 2mbit (pretty much maxed), but I had a couple of lowish syncs during the weekend ( 2090kbps :( ) so i'm now back at 1.5mbit/177kbs.

Seems that the router loses sync most nights between 10-11pm and resyncs lower (although normally >2300kbps), but if it resyncs before or after this it resyncs higher (~2400-2700kbps).

Man, I was getting a synch rate of 3.7MB on an SNR that ranged from 3 on a bad day to 6 on a good day!

I got downgraded to 1MB regular ADSL due to having my profile locled at 0.5MB, hope I get speeds as good as that when I re-grade to MAX again. :(

What router do you have btw? :)

DG834.

My SNR varies literally as i look at it some days.

Currently at 2272 kbps/10dB SNR.

1.5mbit BRAS though :(

Trouble with the BRAS caps is that it only seems to take one low sync to drop it a level, and then days/weeks to get it back up a level with higher syncs. I wish it was more dynamic tbh

EDIT: Nope, looks like I have lost another 0.5mbit whilst at work./ sync'd at 2272 and on a 1mbit BRAS, and a 1mbit flaky BRAS at best. I wish BTw would sort it out :(

Yeah I think it is silly that it drops quickly but takes between 3-10 days (depending whether you are interleaved or not) to go back up again. I hope that BT will revise their MAX system so that it is more dynamic. It should always give you a speed up to your sync rate, not take days to change.

No chance whatsoever I'm afraid :( TBH you'll be doing well to get a stable 1Mb.
