a few question if somebody can assist,

looking at 1GB SHDS upgrade,i appreciate that the connection will change to fibre,

1st question - will my external IP stay the same (or will they issue a new one this is key)

2nd question if existing kit is only RJ45 , could we go fibre patch to router then cat6 from router to firewall as CAT6 is certified to cover those speeds

getting the usual generated emails with info that i need advice on

TIA

Jas

I would say highly likely IP would change. Cat5e with RJ45 is certified to 1Gbe so not a requirement for cat6? Or is there a distance issue?

i thought our 100mb circuit would be upgraded, bt router on site will not take fibre in no capacity, firewall is the same hence i thought possibly media converter , main killer is why change external , will cause no end of trouble in vpn's , mail etc

thought at least upgrade would keep same external ip , had no contact from them and initial engineer hinted dont know why they have put in new circuit and not worked old one

to an extent, all external VPNs will need changed from remote sites which we need to travel to , DNS changed for mail , external webhosting ??, anything else that could catch me out - limited documentation to follow

All a change of IP usually requires is an update to the external DNS settings. Hardly a major issue.

Sure, if you're only running a small number of services. A change of IP would be an absolute no-go for us, it would take hours of planning!

If you host more than a handful of websites/domains inside your network an IP change would take hours to prepare for and cause a heck of a lot of downtime whilst we try and prepare a mass-update of DNS records across tens/hundreds of domains. Not to mention the site-to-site VPNs running, inbound and outbound SMTP for hosted Exchange platforms etc...

Surely an SHDS product doesn't have an IP as such because it's layer 2, and the IP addresses are whatever you want to use on the link?

thats the point , no PM advised from BT , nobody knows and told we will be in touch soon , just loads of email with no point of contact

About to change our external IPs for the second time in 3 months (not through choice). Irritating but do-able but we only have about 8 port forwards and DNS entries. Biggest fear is not ending up having the mail server marked as spammy.

From the thread where nutcase_1uk's mail server was discussed I got the impression that their employer was ridiculously frugal.

Are you dealing with BT Local Business? Because they are all inept clowns and I feel sorry for you.

There's no technical reason why you can't retain IP addresses when you switch product. In theory the most BT would have to do is a bit of BGP config. Personally if I were doing a circuit migration I'd insist that the IP addresses are ported over.
