Been trying to get this fixed for over a month now since moving to a new house 5-mins up the road. My line is capable of 8mb download yet I only ever get between 0.5 and 2mb unless It's 4am... They just say "you share the service with all other users and congestion is the result of this". It's ridiculous, I can barely load a youtube video at 144p. My connection is going to the same box my last house did so I don't see the logic in this.

I'm on fiber with BT and often get considerably more than advertised (pay for 40, have seen 65+). If you can get it I'd say it's well worth the extra few quid.

See if you can get some more locals to complain until they increase capacity / reduce contention ratio. I had this a few years back and I stumbled across a thread on the cable forums where others in my postcode (it turned out two others were on my cul-de-sac, the bandwidth robbing gits) were also experiencing the same problems. We all wrote letters and hounded daily, and when we threatened legal proceedings, it was sorted within a week.

Seeing that you said you had no alternative to BT, how about going mobile with a 3G stick? I just ran speedtest.net with Orange/EE and got 9.6Mbps down and 1.6Mbps up and a ping of 114ms.

I get the same issue as the op on the option 3 package. And no fibre availability either unfortunately.

Yea, BT are awful. I'm on Virgin fibre now (thank god) but at my old house where there was no fibre, I got 0.1mbps with BT. I changed to Virgin phone line and got 8mbps.

I complained to BT 10s of times but they didn't care. They even tried to charge me to leave. Never again.

For awhile I was getting 1mbps or less on a line capable of 17 - 20mbps. It was fine outside of peak times. In the end I called up almost everyday for 2 weeks and it magically got fixed even though then denied it was their fault :)
