BT upgrade to full fibre question please

Sorry to hijack this thread but will the ONT be installed only where the current master socket is installed?

I would prefer to have it installed somewhere else
I reckon that would be an option, but they could suggest an easier direct access.

My copper line comes in at the front but then an internal phone cable from a junction box runs up through the loft and down into the back room, where the master socket is.

I fully expect any future fibre install to want to put the ONT where the cable enters the property. I can't see them doing a cable pull to run it then terminate where the master socket is.. but I might see if I can do that part as I reckon I could pull a new fibre cable through as I pull the old copper out... We'll see.

Thats an interesting photo. If i knew someone who could have showed me that, it might have made a difference.

However, the power point is about 3 feet away, and it already has multi sockets for TV, Freeview recorder, hifi amp, DVD, and an equaliser.

Then I would want to receive the actual broadband to my desktop in the spare back room, which is currently hard wired from the front socket equivalent to yours.

I don't see an output wire from your socket though, to connect to this router via the similar socket in the spare room at the back of the house ?

For power you could probably make room if you think about it and run a 3 foot approx extension lead and use a 6 way extension lead.

The black lead with the red plug is the router cable, my router sits on top of that wooden sideboard you can just see in the picture. Then there is a network switch from the router which feeds 3 different points around the house via ethernet as the ports on the router are full. Years ago I thought sod it and wired up the house with ethernet. Once you think about the routing it was fairly easy to do. Upstairs I routed outside, through my porch roof into our small bedroom upto another network switch which feeds upstairs. Its all 1gb network. Well worth the effort.

If you are moving house I would just stick with what you have till you move.

Yes only next to the master socket. BT Openreach wont wire it anywhere else internally. You get some T&C fine print and its all in there what they will and wont do.

FFS It's impossible to follow that route unless they drill through the wall and make a complete mess of the exterior route which is currently hidden behind the porch fixtures

I'm going to relocate the master socket. Surely I can do that ?

In hindsight, relocating is a stupid idea as all openreach will want to do is follow the cable in its entirely

I can probably blag that they didn't install it properly in the first place

I used to read full fibre reviews and never appreciate the speeds quoted. I then moved to a rural setting, overhead BT phone lines providing 2mb a second speed, terrible 4G/5G and the only option left, Starlink at £75 a month for around 100-120mb speeds

Nope, they'll put it elsewhere. My copper master socket was in the corner of the living room, right above the exit from the duct that runs under my driveway and front garden. The ONT was installed in my study which is about a 7m run from the duct exit. The Openreach guy ran the fibre very neatly under the front door, around a bay window and round the corner.

They won't do internal cabling, but they will run the fibre externally.

I don't understand why you are looking to have anything installed if your house is for sale. You will have to break the contract to move, which will cost you an arm and a leg.
As long as you use BT at your new place you don’t get charged. They do restart your contract period though!

Thanks mate

This has settled me and given me some hope

What about if there's a long internal cable run to get to the master socket?

Yeah forgot about that they will do the fibre externally but even then there are some caveats, eg they wont use ladders if you want it upstairs has to be on ground level. What they do when people have the master socket upstairs I have no idea as I know in some houses this is where it is. Normally they come in just above where your existing BT copper comes in. They dont take the old wiring/socket away either they leave it for you to do internally and the copper wiring externally stays where it is.

It also depends on the BT Openreach Engineer some are more accommodating than others. Mine was not actually a BT Openreach Engineer it was a sub contractor. He was telling me some horror stories when he had to go in and fix failed installs by Openreach Engineers.

On one of my recent fibre installs at work, they removed all the external copper wiring and the drop wire from the pole. Not sure if that's a new thing, they haven't done that before on my past installations.

The non Openreach engineers are much more flexible with installs, Kelly's have installed fibre into basements for me and will also put it into lofts if it's boarded.
