just thought id share some of my photos i took last week at Brands Hatch..

I was using my Dads Nikon Coolpix 4800, which is 4mp, 8.4 optical zoom...since it wasnt my camera i had to learn how to use it, and didnt take many good ones, so out of like 250 pictures (from just sunday!) only about 50 are worth looking at... anyway, a few of my favorites:

comments?

EDIT: Pictures now smaller, but clickable to the 1280x1024 size image (on underbosses advice) and 1 extra picture

They look very good, imo, considering you were using a point and click type camera they are very impressive. I dont know what kind of manual controls that camera has but youve managed to get good panned shots with a decent amount of movement and blur in them. One thing that I dont like is the amount of noise in the shots, ive run one thru Neat Image and its cleaned up quite well, hope you dont mind.

yeah i noticed that all the shots have a lot of noise... not sure why?

i dunno if thats the best i can do with a "simple" digital compact camera? :)

Do you know what your ISO setting was? Looks like it may have been 400 at a guess of things! Some good photo's though, the BMW single seaters are my favourite...the BTCC cars would have looked really good if you could have captured some of the sense of the close racing...as they always appear to be on the TV :)

Good use of the gear you had though.

Oh yea, this has started. Gonna try to get down Croft again.

One i took last year when they were down Newcastle Quayside. I dont know why, but i really like it.

they all seem to be ISO-50...

what exactly does ISO mean....im a total newbie... is it sensitivity on the sensor? is a higher ISO better than a lower etc?

Yeah, it's a measure of the sensitivity of the sensor and analogous to ASA ratings on film. Lower ISOs are neither better or worse than higher ones, each has advantages and disadvantages.

Higher ISOs (400 on point & shoot and 800+ on DSLRs) tend to lead to image noise caused mainly by the process of amplifying the sensor output to increase sensitivity. It's more prevelant on point and shoots because their sensors are physically smaller and hence less light hits each photosite and therefore more amplification is required.

What high ISOs do allow though is a higher shutter speed for a given aperture or smaller aperture for a given shutter speed than a lower ISO. The upshot of this is in lower light situatuons you can increase the ISO to still give a shutter speed that will stop action or allow hand holding.

Normally you would want to keep the ISO as low as possible to reduce image noise and only increase it when required to get the shot you want.

Could you resize them to less than 800x600. They're too big even at 1280x1024 (ish). They look good though :)
