Bu-ray edging ahead

Neither's going to win, one might have a larger portion. But with dual players already available. It's going to be like cvc-r and dvd+r. Neither will win they'll just live side by side.

I dont believe the dual players are actually available - yes they are fully developed (and maybe even demo'ed) but as far as I have seen they havent been allowed to actually release to the public

LG have released a dual format capable unit, and it has been reviewed in the US. Initial feedback is that it's pretty much on par with the existing HD-DVD and BD players for video and audio quality, is missing the interactive functionality of HD-DVD, and costs pretty much as a standalone HD-DVD and BD player put together.

I would bet it's cheaper to buy a ps3 and hd-dvd drive+pc/360 than a dual format player anyway.

Agreed. Assuming you have an AV amp and don't mind the noise, frankly they're a MUCH more sensible buy.
Always struck me that Sony would be onto a winner if they added a USB2 port onto their PS3 and enabled functionality to connect up the MS HD-DVD drive.

There are 4 USB2 ports - and not sure how sony could stop a standard usb drive from functioning (obviously some aplet would be required - but with the rumoured linux distribution working...........)

It should work, the 360 hd-dvd drive works on a pc, so with linux on the ps3 it shouldnt be long before drivers and a program come out to play hd-dvds.

So that would reduce the price in total to £545

Plus you can get the base ps3 from hong kong for £244, or £208 if customs miss it. :D

Can't believe the price is more than double in the uk!

The PS3 playing HD-DVDs just seems like such an obvious thing for Sony to do. Why encourage users to buy Xbox's, when you could rig one upto a PS3?

Of course you might not want to proclaim it, but they could always "leak" drivers onto the net by accident. That would give us a combo player for under £600, perfect!

And what happens if you get a faulty unit - all likely hood is that you have to start again and ditch the initial £200+ , and even if you dont I bet the shippin ,testing, return to Sony and shipping of a new one takes a heck of a lot longer than returning to HMV etc (not to mention shipping costs which you would probably have to pay for 1st even if etailer agrees to reimburse once its tested as faulty)

Its a heck of a saviing I grant you but is it worth it? Is HK the same BR region as the UK? I know some films are coming region free, but this is slightly up in the air still isnt it?

Even if the ps3 fails and you have to buy another one you still save money, but the ps3 doesn't seem to have any major issues like the 360 did afaik so it's very unlikely that will happen, for a possible saving of over £200 I would definatley take the very small risk, all things considered. By the time it did fail I could seriously imagine huge price drops anyway judging by the PS3s current lower than expected sales in America.

Sorry I think you misunderstood

Surely under warrenty period for a UK bought unit, you toddle along to store and get an immediate change (when they have stock of course)

An HK import would mean the sending back to them is at your expense, the additional time this takes, not to mention the difference in the actual warrenty (usually different regions have different legal stipulations on what the retailer has to do)

I personally on such a (relatively) high value item would much prefer a reasonably local retailer - even if its bought on the web, as long as its mainland UK then you have more inherrant rights legally when /if things go wrong

I know what you mean, but if the hk ps3 fails you could buy another one and still have paid less than £425 for a single uk ps3 so it's worth the risk.

commonly known as "putting good money after bad" :D

Only kidding with you mate - hmmmm I would still think that was a bad idea but either way I dont mind anyone supporting the ps3 (to have the market place fought over by three big companies will always be a good thing in my book)

Don't know if you'd have much success with an import in terms of warranty.

Sony have been pretty strict on some exporting shops in Asia. Did they not sue one into bankruptcy?

No lik-sang decided to quit for an unknown reason, sony didn't recieve any money from them.
