Hi guys,

Need to buy a SSD to replace a failing HDD for my in-laws laptop.

They think the laptop needs to be replaced bit for what they use it for (not much), I think a SSD will have it running faster than ever at 1/3 the cost of a new one.

They don't need the fastest SSD out there, just something decent and reliable & around 200Gb.

Any tips for what to look at?
Thanks.

what's your budget for the SSD?

here are some of the 250GB SSDs

YOUR BASKET
1 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £86.99
1 x SK Hynix 256GB SSD SH910A SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (HFS256G32MNB-2201A) £84.98
1 x OCZ Arc 100 Series 240GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (ARC100-25SAT3-240G) £82.73
1 x Crucial BX100 250GB SSD SATA 6Gbps 7mm Solid State Drive (CT250BX100SSD1) £78.98
Total : £343.28 (includes shipping : £8.00).

there is very few 200GB SSDs, other than that you have 120GB, 250GB or 512GB these are the commonly used sizes for SSDs so I would suggest getting a 250GB SSD if the budget can reach to it

Yeh, I was expected 250Gb, although with SSDs you do sometimes get odd sizes and so didn't want to rule anything out.

No specific budget, just a good VfM option, at the lower end of the scale.

Yeh, If I was buying for myself, I'd probably go with the evo850, but looking for something cheaper here.
Given that laptop is probably worth £100, its not really cost-effecting to spend the same again on an SSD!
Trying to keep the price down -otherwise, they could sell their laptop, put the extra £100 in to make £200 and they'd only need another £100 to buy a new i3 lappy.

This is your best bet then:

The BX100 range is probably the best value SSD at moment. They perform very similarly to the MX100 in real world tasks, but are a little cheaper and are much more power efficient. Which is a real benefit when used in a laptop.
