Budget 24" or larger gaming monitor?

I've built my son a gaming machine which he is very pleased with (Ryzen 2600, 16gb, Vega 64). I also gave him a spare old Dell 2407 and the response times on it are quite poor compared to my monitor. In Fortnite you can definitely tell there is a lag compared to my own monitor.

I am on a tight budget but what monitor would people recommend for him? It needs to be 24" or larger as he is used to my large 30" monitor. He only uses it for FPS gaming such as Fortnite. I guess 1080p would be OK. I know at the budget end I will have to make some sacrifices. So response times are more critical than image quality.

Thank you.

It's not about response times, but about input lag.
Those S-PVA paneled Dell 2407s' had some crazy level input lag.
Partially because of RTC implementation of those S-PVAs needing buffering one frame.
I think worst one had input lag around 60ms, which is nearly whole four frames and would be detectable even in normal desktop use.

Don't think any display since then has had as bad input lag.
So any monitor is going to be lot better.

Compared to your 30" 16:10 monitor 24" 16:9 would be really small, so 27" would be better
Also marketroid's excrement 1920x1080 would feel total crap after 2560x1600 in normal use.
It's actually worser than 1920x1200 of that old Dell.
So considering how long monitor can be used 2560x1440 would be better.

And for gaming FreeSync is good to have.
In gaming aimed monitors 32" (almost as high image as in your 30" 16:10) actually isn't more expensive than 27".
Like this being actually cheaper than any non-TN FreeSync model:

144Hz non-TNs are at £300 level.

See my post history on the AW2518HF. Tell him you bought him the same monitor as Ninja. It would ne very hard to beat 240hz it would work from 48-240hz range. ;)
