Hey

I have a pretty old rig but it runs the games I play fine:

Mobo: SABERTOOTH X58
CPU: i7 950
GPU: Nvidia GTX 660

The problem is the 24" monitor is just not cutting it anymore and I would like to upgrade to 27". As its such an old rig I dont want to spend a lot on it but im not planning on upgrading any time soon so dont want "cheap and cheerful" either.

Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions?

Were you planning on sticking to 1920x1080? I would suggest taking a look at a 27" 1080p monitor first, for my eyes its a bit too low resolution for the size, at the distance I sit at anyway.

The problem with 1440p though is that your GPU will struggle with the amount of pixels.

But checking the specs for max res for the GPU it says:

3840x2160 at 30Hz or 4096x2160 at 24Hz supported over HDMI. 4096x2160 (including 3840x2160) at 60Hz supported over Displayport. Support for 4k tiled MST displays requires 326.19 driver or later.

Or is that very optimistic? I was hoping to get a better res

The problem isn't that the GPU won't "support" the resolution, itself. The problem is, that the GAMES will require quite a lot horsepower to actually output frames at that resolution. You'll be cranking down the detail settings, if you're going for a higher resolution.

Whereas for regular desktop usage (internet browsing, office applications, movies/videos, etc.) the GPU will do just fine.

Hmm, I thought as much but I have no way to know if my rig can support the resolution or not until i test it, and I dont really know anyone with a monitor I can test with.

I am planning on overclocking the rig at some point so maybe that would give it the required horse power needed to run the higher resolution? but again I have no way of knowing until I test it.

I think I will hold off buying a new monitor for now, atleast until I can see how much I can overclock the computer.

Thanks for your help as always :)

Just to clarify:

You GPU *will* run on that resolution. But if you were getting smooth 60fps on a game before with 1080p, you might be looking at 40fps when using the higher resolution (1440p). This is quite an individual matter, some games scale relatively well with the resolution increase, but some games might choke.

If you're using "low" settings already, then 1440p will not be good for you. But if you're using high or med, then just step down to lower detail levels, remove anti-aliasing, etc.

But the bottom line is, your GPU is getting old, and newer games will struggle to run smoothly with it.

Overclocking might give you some leeway, but it most certainly won't be enough to counteract the performance drop completely.
