OK, this is for my little brother who is off to Uni in about a month. I have a spare case sat here, but thats about it. It'll be used for all the normal Uni uses; word processing, web surfing, some gaming (COD4:MW and flash games mainly) so you can see what is needed. Budget is around £250, and I have come up with this so far:

Anyone see any problems with this? Maybe suggest some alternatives?

I went with the AMD dues to to ease of upgrading when the old student loan comes in, but other than that it was all down to cost. Pretty sure I can ignore the shipping too.

Cheers guys :)

You might aswell try the MM. Should be able to get a better setup for £250!

I built a pretty banging rig for £250ish without a graphic card for that, don't give him that rig..

Get a good base, then he might wanna upgrade the graphic later, you looking high end dual or mid quad with that money..

Its been some time since I built from scratch, so thanks for pointing me to the right direction. Can anyone post alternatives? Just not sure on what would be a better buy without having something to see infront of me, if you catch my drift?

Try the Members Market or elsewhere, for a decent 'higher end' dual core base, but apart from the base, try get an okay HDD which isn't B grade as its going to store all of his stuff, so its best not to lose it, unless you have an external backup option of course :)

This what I would do if you were going to get some parts of members market.

From MM get:
A socket 775 p45/p35 motherboard, ~£30
4GB DDR2 800MHZ, ~£40
CPU E6600 ~£30
CPU Cooler ~£10
Graphic card 4850 ~£40

MM Total: £150

From OCUK (with free shipping):

So that comes to £300, but its a far superior rig, and its really hard to get within budget with a monitor.. You could use less ram and cut £20, use a worse gfx card, but the 4850 is pretty good still, with this you have core components which are new and solid.. You can prob pick up a screen on MM as well..

Food for thought..

Actually I have this spec..

P5NSLI
2GB DDR2 Corsair XMS2
CPU E6600
Coolermaster Hyper TX3 CPU Cooler
Sat in my living room doing nothing.

Well you best get posting if you want to flog it :D

Take the prices away before someone thinks your trying to sell it outside MM and closes this thread, would be quite annoying.

Didn't mean it at those prices was just copy pasting it for spec sake, I can't get on the MM yet anyway :(

Something like this sounds fine, else an AM2 Phenom II X2 rig should cost about the same.
