Hi

Which budget waterproof camera would you suggest for recording on the bike?

I got a GoPro Hero for £99 yesterday. Just about to go out and test it now!

Note that you have no option to plug in a mic on the GoPro Hero but an external sound recorder will be far superior anyway. As it happens I bought a Zoom H2N to test out too today :p

Ahh, that's a bit rubbish if you want to do commenary - but if not then yeah a seperate sound recorder in a pocket will be miles better than the biult in mic.

Well the camera has a built in mic like the others (and comes with a skeleton back door), but no mic socket.

Just came back from a 1h10m ride and had about half battery life left, while my GoPro Hero 3+ died right at the end.

Loading all of the content into Sony Vegas to see how it looks. I used 1080p60 on the Hero 3+ and 720p60 on the Hero.

i have a couple of SJ4000's and a Sony as30v . Both give decent video performance and both better than my gopro . Both suffer badly with wind noise but the sony has an option for an external mic (if you use the optional cradle)

For the money the sj4000 is just as good as the gopro imho but if you want decent sound or wanna vblogg then look at summit different .

There is a lot of fake sj4000 so make sure you get a proper one if thats what you decide to get

been looking at getting a camera for my rides out for a while now mainly for a safety side of things as im not bothered about vlogging, anyway quick question would it be better to put the extra 50 quid towards the gopro hero 3 or stick with the £99 hero? any major differences to make it worth it. also do you notice the weight of the camera on your helmet?

The Hero 2014 is very light, and I get about 2.5 hours battery life out of it compared to just 1-1.5 on the Hero 3+ Black depending on the settings.

It looks like the Hero 4's suffer even worse battery life than the 3+ Black!

You only get 1080p30 or 720p60 (perfect for youtube) on the base model Hero while the higher end models can give you up to 4K resolution and up to 240fps footage (not both though).

You can compare the Hero and the White here:
http://shop.gopro.com/EMEA/compare?category=cameras

The video quality and angle, and battery life and are better on the Hero while the White has features like replaceable battery, WiFi, larger capacity SD card support, mic port etc.

One thing to note is that if you don't mount the camera on your chin 2 things happen:
1 - You really feel the wind pushing on the camera
2 - Your footage looks stupid as you have your helmet taking up lots of the image.

I've gone for the SJ4000. It's lacking an external mic port but you can solder one on using one of the many guides available eg. http://www.instructables.com/id/SJ4000-External-Microphone-HACK/

I've been meaning to get a cheap recorder. Might checkout the new gopro hero :)

QUMOX @ SJ4000 with accessories (lots!) is £73 on the rainforest! Looks like a better deal and doesn't look too bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83HxtK-6UXg

Even the cheaper £38.99 one on the rain forest comes with all the extra accessories but it is shipped from China.

What's the low light capabilities like on the Hero? That's where the difference between that and a better camera will show, with noise/grain etc.

There is an auto low light mode on the Hero but I have yet to see a review on it yet.... I don't imagine it to be great.

Are there many (or any) cameras that'll do at least 4 hours recording time on one charge? Seems like they usually do 2-3 hours :/
