Hey, I was thinking about getting an upgrade as I've been barred from using my dad's PC for gaming(COD2) and mine's pretty rubbish.

I reckon 50-70£ is the top I can spend I reckon as I don't really want to pay more and don't think I'd need to, seeing as I only play on the DX7 renderer.

I have:
Athlon 1800+(my motherboard is limiting the speed from 1500mhz to 1200 :/ for some reason despite supporting the speed :o)
GF3 ti200
256mb ram
Asus mobo(forgotten model doubt it's necessary).
more detail(sysspec output):

Anyway, I was thinking about getting a cheap mobo and athlon 3000+, maybe some more ram and a 9800Pro, but was unsure how much this would cost, and whether it would actually play COD2 at 1280x960 with everything on low and DX7.

Thanks a lot. :)

You could get a new gfx and some ram or u could get just a new cpu up 2 u

new gfx u could get this (if it is PCI E) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-071-MS (if it is AGP then u could get this) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-074-SP

and ram u could get this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-003-OK

that will giv u 512mb of ram and u will have a nice gfx card

and if u wan ted to update the cpu they don t sell the the old amd socket no more so if u wan ted one u could buy else where

For playing cod2 too much :D Haven't played it since last winter :(

Ok I'll have a look into those things. Will have a browse on the bay.

Was mostly wondering whether the 9800 would suffice.

Thanks a lot guys.

Look in the Members Market you may get a bargin or two, not going to get much with £70 you would need £200 minimum for a mobo, cpu, 512mb of ram and a graphics card.

Or if money is tight get this and another 256 of ram.

Good overclocker, decent onboard sound and slightly more up to date. But still quite old.

Does your current mobo run at a 133 fsb or 100 ? Run CPUZ the mainboard tab should tell you the make and model of mobo you have. :)

To be honest with you the 9800 wont handle Call of Duty 2 well.

the 9800 handles COD2 perfectly well... my bro has it and we can run it DX9 no problems... i think we have AA up to the 1st notch... 1024 x 768 res... etc nothing really lousy..

my bro has the 9800XT 256Mb...

I think the best you'll do for £70 is secondhand stuff....

£30 or so on 512mb of extra memory, you are shockingly lacking ram for an XP system.

Then £40 on a vid card......

If you hunt around for deals i think thats the best way you could spend £70 personally.

Yeah, I upgraded it from ME (was rubbish  )

I was thinking about second hand, probably MM or bay.

Sound is fine, I have 5.1 speakers and a SBlive! 5.1, but also an E-MU0404 I use for recording stuff with..

Surprisingly it's fine with this amount of ram, but games more recent than Cs1.6, Sid meiers Pirates, Deus ex and, surprisingly, Dawn of war, slay it. Doesn't really like COD1 either.

I might try get my dad to upgrade his motherboard and proc to an e6300 type jobby and get his old athXP.
