hi

a friend didnt have much of a clue about upgrading his comp but he went out and bought a few parts but now got stuck so any help would be great.

can he get a CPU (onboard graphics) to fit these items for £80

he already as.

Aerocool Syclone II Midi Tower Case
corsair CX500 PSU
4gig DDR3 mem 1600
Asus Z97-K Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

That was a big mistake getting a z97 motherboard he could have got a cheaper one and still overclocked

No it wasn't a waste :) The Z97 boards quite a few more features, are better for upgrading to i5k or i7k CPU's in the future, allow for faster RAM and more. That Z97-K isn't much more expensive than a solid H97 board. imo it was a giid buy

Well his parts are very basic anyway so it wouldnt be just the cpu he'd have to upgrade.

The board would stay. The PSU would stay, just 1 DIMM of 4GB RAM, new CPU so why spend another ~£80 on a board?

Just because its a lower tier chipset doesnt mean you cant stick a 4790 in there. I just think at this moment the money could have been spent better elsewhere, we've all made mistakes in builds but we need to learn from it :p (coming from someone who bought a 800w power supply for a hd7770 system ;)

True, however what about faster RAM? Overclocking K-series CPU's? Higher resale value? For the relatively small outlay (normally £0 extra for a Z97 over a H97 board! Z97P-D3 for example) you get more "bang for buck" while not spending any extra. Why spend the same amount and go for something worse?

Those are all fair points. His motherboard goes for roughly £90 and b81 chipset motherboards go for like £45, that £45 saved could have gone towards an ssd for a faster overall system however it would have less advantages for long term use and upgradeability because of the reasons you have stated (slower ram supported, no overclocking etc).
