As title. Buying a budget gaming setup for my son. CPU will be paired with a single 7850, 8gb ram displaying at 1920 x 1080. I've read that AM3+ has more longevity as a socket or is that not the case? As both I3 and the FX-6 are around the same price, which would you recommend I buy?

Cheers :D

Depends on the type of games he plays-

if mainly mmos or RTS type games, the i3 3220 etc would be better; if for the newer FPS EA titles such as BF3, Fry Cry 3, Crysis 3 or any other future FPS games from EA (that would scale with 6 cores or above), then the FX-6350 would perform much better.

But to get good performance in both of these category, then i5 (or above) is the only way to go (but would cost more).

There I fixed the typo for you. The performance is already "good".
Not exactly a typo...was just saying both i3 and FX-6 are good at one area, but weak at another (game performance wise); but i5 is good for both situation :D

Personally, I'd try hunting down something like a (2nd hand) i5-2500K for under £120 or i5-3570K for under £140.

Out of them choices I'd get the 6350. AM3+ may have Steamroller on it (although not confirmed) and can be overclocked when paired with a decent motherboard (preferably a 990FX chipset). With 6 cores it may perform better in the upcoming games since they are starting to use more cores.

Either hold off for Haswell which should bring back overclocking on lower chips, such as i3's etc, or go for an FX6300.
I couldn't buy an i3 3220 over an FX6300 unless I was replacing the i3 quickly.

Cheers fellas. I suspect that socket longevity really doesn't matter too much providing the CPU is paired with a decent GPU. I'll probably go for an increase in budget and get an i5.

I agree with holding out for Haswell, you could get yourself a Haswell 4670k for around the same price as the 3570k is currently, or buy a second hand 3570k/2500k off the forums cheaply when people upgrade.

This is what I plan to do, either Haswell i7 or a second hand ivy i7 from the forums
