original build (with the Z77-D3H) is fine. Would spend a lil more on the case but it will do the job. And DVD drive, well maybe you can scrounge one from somewhere.

Don't particularly need a DVD drive. If he needs one I have a spare he can have anyway. But these days 90% of games you buy are digital downloads. I'll load Win7 via my external USB drive.
Case wise; for the money it will do the job and it looks tidy/minimalistic. Don't wanna spend any further as as you can see it is a tight budget. The only part I'd spend more on is something that will increase performance.
