Hi folks.
I am looking at upgrading my rig to Intel but am trying to do it on a budget. I am going to be going for a dual core chip not core2 for now but am after some suggestions on mobo. I want to be able to upgrade to quad core in the future so am open to suggestions.

Thanks.

This one is pretty good, but for a bit more this one is excellent.

But TBH, a better bet would be to go for an AMD Phenom II Quad core and an AM3 board, they are as fast as the fastest core 2 quad, and they are not coming to the end of their life.

Sorry, the intial link was indeed for RAM and clearly a mistake. I have corrected it now, with a few other options.

Edit: In your OP you say, "I am going to be going for a dual core chip not core2" , do you mean pentium dual core (like this), if so then it is a core 2 CPU - just with different branding, or were you meaning something else?

Yeah thats the CPU I was looking at. Just after recommendations for a decent budget board really. Like I say, one that will take a quad core a year down the line maybe

EDIT: Just re-read your post. Thanks for the links. Checking them out now

I would go with the Gigabyte, been using Gigabyte in my last 2 builds and not had any complaints.

Good stuff, it's a nice CPU that. The first board in my first post (the gigabye one) is probably the best value option for that, it will happily accommodate a s775 quad core later on.

However, if you went for this board and this CPU it will cost about the same - but give you superior performance and upgradability. With this setup you will need a set of new DDR3 RAM, but i'm guessing you would want more than 2GB with your new system anyway. Stuff like this is great.

Looking at the Phenoms then...which board would you recommend for this?

AM3 is what you really want, very quick and there looks to be many new CPUs coming out for it - so its the best choice for doing drop-in upgrades in the future. With this in mind, this new motherboard seems to fit the bill.

Ok thanks for the options. Liking the look of the Phenoms now I've done some reading up.

Looking at the motherboard, it says that it supports 1600 & 1800 speeds (OC). Does this mean that the board will over clock the RAM? Confused!

I think it means that these speeds are supported, but the speeds cannot be guaranteed to be stable by the board manufacturer. That's my understanding at least.

Oh right I see. I've tried to have a look on the Asus website to try and clarify but I can't even find the board listed on there for some reason. Does anybody else know if cmndr_andi's understanding of the above is correct?
