I’ve visited 3 different computer specialists/builders/fix it all-ers and asked them to price me up a gaming Tower (note, no keyboards/mouse/monitor) and that I have £1000 to spend.
2 of them we’re not enthusiastic, 1 even went so far as to say “low end gaming then”
The other asked if I could stretch to 1200.

Am I being unreasonable to want to play total war, or such games on a rig built with a £1000 budget? Considering I’m not interested in bells and whistles (RGB) but in a good airflow case and to play 60fps not 100’s and have a ******* contest with benchmarking etc

What’s everyone’s thoughts? Tear me a new one

I paid about £750 in total for my rig and I'm still more than capable of playing everything that I want to play at 1080p (except No Man's Sky, which is just really badly optimised!). All I've then done after that is upgrade bits as necessary when my budget has allowed. The last upgrade that I did was a GPU upgrade from a Radeon 7850 to a Radeon R390. My next upgrade, using the same case, PSU, GPU etc will probably be to a Ryzen 5 2600, most likely when RAM prices come down because they're ridiculous atm. But I can wait a few months to see what happens so it's all good :)

You should easily be able to get something pretty good for £1k. Those people that you've spoken with are all elitist idiots!

It is good experience building your own. That way you know you don't have to rely on these so called 'specialist' shops. Have a look on Youtube as there is loads of build videos.

I can do you a parts list if you want. I am sure @orbitalwalsh will also chip in if he is online.

Seems a bit daunting, but I guess once everything is out in front of me it will make more sense. I just don’t wanna screw up!

Is there anywhere in the Uk I can buy all the parts in cash...

Parts list would be cool dude! All input is appreciated

It isn't as hard as you might think. We were all in the same boat at some point. Once you have built it you will wonder what all the fuss is about :)

I can't suggest any other stores apart from ocuk as it would be against the rules. You can pay with paypal though if you have a paypal account.


Here is a rough spec with a Ryzen R5 2600 6 core cpu and an RX 580. The bundle includes a 240GB SSD as well for windows/games and 16GB Ram.

Should be good for a 1080p monitor. If you wanted to spend the £1000 then you could go with a better gpu such as the Vega 56 or GTX 1070. The RX 580 is a pretty good gpu for 1080p though.

I was mostly referring to them stating that a £1k gaming rig is low end. No way is that low end.

I’ve always built my own, for the last twenty five years or so :) It’s always good fun and you’ll learn a lot about them by doing it yourself :) Plus, if you get stuck you can always ask for advice on here.

What Lee has done , can switch to Fouls 550w at £66 to save some cash . Lowest price good PSU considered on here .

Adds extra £50 . Board comes wth 256GB SSD so larger then bundle , also has StoreMI to link SSD and HDD as large fast hybrid

Definitely build your own. If you buy a bundle, I believe they’re tested before shipping so you then shouldn’t run into any problems. If you’re under budget and want to spend a bit more on something, upgrade the GPU to something slightly better unless you’re only gaming at 1080p. Or consider a higher rated PSU just in case!
 
There's some good options out there. Bundle and graphics won't be found much cheaper elsewhere, case can perhaps be chosen from elsewhere (or different case), PSU maybe as well. You may be able to find a riotoro PSU 650w gold, for lower elsewhere (I did) and they're very good.

£60 over, but as I said, you may be able to find savings elsewhere. That's a top tier AMD graphics card, OK Nvidia may be better, but Freesync monitors are cheaper as/when you upgrade.

The case can probably be changed, I've not tried it myself either. If you can find a cheap Meshify C I can recommend that.

The CPU stock cooler on Ryzens are good enough, it can be a later upgrade for something more serious. The 2 extra 140mm intake fans are high quality fans that will overcome resistance produced by case filters, rather than spending money on fans that may not end up actually bringing in cool air.

Knowing me, I've probably forgotten something essential!

No one in their right mind would pay £140 for Windows :) As mentioned above you can use it for free without activating it if you don't mind the watermark bottom right corner, and not being able to personalize desktop. Otherwise functions same as a retail copy.

I know, £140 is a lot but the cheaper versions that you can buy are dubious at best and can be deactivated at any time so it depends on whether you want to risk the hassle. All I was saying is that it needs to be factored in!

OS was another of my questions anyway.
I want the pc purely for gaming, I won’t even use google on it! What exactly is the best option, and has anyone ever actually been deactivated for not coughing up for an activation code?
