Hi all,

Been rebuilding my system over the last few days when I get the odd spare couple of hours and all was going well until I tried fitting my cpu waterblock - heatkiller. I was so fixated with getting the backplate on properly that when I screwed the mounts in by hand I turned the board round to find I had forgotten to put the washer on the other side too. 2 out of 4 holes are fine but the other 2 now have a copper line on each exposed. It could be completely fine but then again it might not be and I know it will play on my mind now. I have a few options really:

a) Put it back on air and test for a few days and all being well re-watercool it.
b) Jack it in and get a new motherboard / ram / cpu - I have a 5% discount to use at OC.
c) Get a second hand board so I can use cpu and ram
d) Give up, ha.

Any advice would be great.

All those options seem to be over reactions.

Is there actually any sort of issues you're experiencing?

Is there any reason you can't take the block off and just fit the washers?

Just remove it and install it with the washers. If you haven't powered the board and heard a loud bang, or scratched the **** out of it everything should be fine.

I would just rebuild it and see how it goes. Can't see there being a problem and if there is go with Option C.

I didn't even get to the stage of putting the heatkiller on, I noticed it when I flipped the board round and saw I had hand screwed it in by hand without the washers. Front facing side of the motherboard. You're probably right, I do over react quite easily. Maybe I should just carry on with it and see how it goes. If it has done something though could it potentially kill other bits like ram / cpu / gpu? Or again, is that a massive overeaction? The copper line looks intact just a bit exposed in areas.

Yeah I might just carry on and think sod it!

Only thing is I havent put the block on my gpu yet so if I do carry on with watercooling and it looks like nothings working I won't be sure if its my mb or my gpu so that's why I thought I may but it back on air first maybe.

Ok thanks for info. I'll do that tonight and then just carry on water cooling. Then I'll brace myself when I turn it on for the first time. :D So worse case scenerio and the system doesnt boot because it may of severed the trace would all the other components be alright and not be effected by it?

Yep they should be fine, the only time there's any real chance of other components going pop is when your PSU goes bang.

Can't see any pictures but worst case is you have broken a track, however it would be very poor PCB design to put tracks under a fixing point. It 'should' just be a Ground plane. If it is a senstive track then it could easily be crushed and break the copper if it is under a fixing.
As another poster has said put on something to protect the copper, to stop it oxidising and to stop it connecting to the screw and then carry on as before.

Well I've got loads done tonight as I had the 'sod it' mentality ha ha. Decided not to varnish it in the end as the washer covers it completely. All that's left to do is fit the heat killer 7970 ni hi, put tubing on and fill her up. I turned PC on at the wall and she lights up, so far so good. If I do have issues later on I'll just upgrade and I'll have an excuse so the Mrs can't go mad at me ha ha. Thanks to everyone for their advice.
