Bugging me for over a year - same slow speed for Steam downloads

Yup Jazcentral is right. I read a post just a week ago where the poster had switched over from Virgin cable to Virgin ADSL and that is when the 60k downloads from Steam started.

right now im dling at 720KB/s..thats fast to me cause i NEVER get that speed when downloading of websites.

800 now, its very unconsistant. It will probably go down to 100 in a couple of minutes then back up.

Once it gets to my area i'll probably make the jump to 50mb as the price will drop a bit but 100mb is likely to be about 75 quid a month, bugger that.

I can't imagine they'd charge so much. If they do i'll stick with my 50MB, even if they cut the speeds to a quarter during peak times, it's still 12.5MB which is more than sufficient.

I reckon we'd be looking around £50-£60 for the 100MB but drop down cheaper when it's part of a package. I have my 50MB, unlimited phone, discount overseas calls, tv package without sport or movies for £68 a month at the moment.

Sounds like Virgin then. God I hate their service but we are tied to several more months of their contract :(

EDIT - It doesn't suprise me if it is Virgin. We have been with them for years (blame my mother) and their service has been terrible; 56k speeds in the evening, moving us to a lower package (10gb a month, though I have downloaded a lot more than that in a month) and not making it clear, awful migration when we moved house depiste us giving them plenty of notice (took almost 4 weeks to get the net in the new house) and finally the worst telephone support team I have ever dealt with.

never seen my virgin 20mb cable go above 2mb/sec...which i think relates to 20mb..

There's 8 bits in 1 byte you're getting 2MegaBytes on your 20Megabits line. 20Mb/8=2.5MB/s is the download speed you'd get if the line was running at the max speed.

It's all just an advertising ploy by the companies o make their products sound faster than they are.

Strangely I used to have problem with Virgin when on 20meg cable in Darlo, I just learned to live with it because most other things were fine, but I never could get really decent downloads from steam, always seemed to hover around 500 kbps download rates or lower.

Around a year ago I moved into a flat were I can't get Virgin, after a bad couple of months were I initially went with BT (Worst ISP ever) I changed over to BE ADSL (getting 11-12meg from them) and I get full speed downloads from steam, never seems to drop from 1.4mbps downloads.

I also noticed that strangely my Xbox Live and PS3 PSN all download and seem to just function that bit faster. I just figure that Virgin must have been capping various things and BE arn't.

Virgin ADSL is horrible, had it about 2 years back and the amount of throttling was atrocious, during the evening/peak hours the internet was pretty much back to turn of the millennium speeds, steam <100kbs, youtube unable to stream smoothly. I had to remember to set steam downloads to work between 3am and midday where I'd get ~1Mbs or take my laptop to a friends.

Go over the magical download limit and you could say goodbye to pages even managing to connect reliably.

Virgin cable even with its super good points of being 'high speed' cable and not having to spend money on a phone line is a no go for me due to their ****ty service and caps. Much prefer my unlimited O2 for £7 odd, sure my max speed is about 800kbs but apart from the odd steam game that I'd like a bit quicker its good enough for me as well as being constant and reliable.

steam has always been slow for me aswell, i have never hit my full speed on it 20mb i get from anywhere from 1 to 8 mb with steam, which i guess is good enough, i think it just depends on how many people r downloading the game ur downloading
