Build a PC for uni, or just buy a laptop?

face facts is it life or death that you need a laptop outside your dorm NO, use a pen and paper and write it up later if its so important

When I'm sitting in a library, writing an essay which has to be word-processed and using books which I can't take out, a desktop is useless to me. Writing it up by hand first would mean that it'd take twice as long to do all my work! There are much better things to do at uni than play computer games anyway.

Netbook for lectures and library, PC for everything else. I ended up selling my laptop as it was underpowered to do things when i was back in my room and although its quite light after a day of carrying it on your shoulder they get heavy. Have a great time at uni though :)

Get one of the new Macbook Pro's!!! You definitely won't regret it, I promise. :)

Do this! :D

1st year i had an acer laptop (it was free for being dyslexic) which was pretty much the worst thing ever!

2nd year i had my monster pc and a laptop on the side, i spent most of it playing civ4 and not really using it for anything taxing (or work) so iv sold it and got a mbp!

Ive already commented, but thought of something else. Libraries are full of computers. my one at least has a fair fleet of thin clients which look weird and therefore sit idle. So as one of half a dozen students using one, while everyone else uses dedicated celerons, I'm laughing. Can't do 3D worth a damn but very quick for everything else.

Remote desktop is fantastic. I plug in a usb stick, run nxclient from it and suddenly I'm looking at my normal desktop. Higher latency than normal as the connection is over 10 mb, but still quicker than a notebook as soon as I ask it to do anything difficult :)
