Hi,

I have been trolling this forum since 04 but never got around to register - I thought it is about time for me to do the right thing! :)

Going to upgrade my 5 year old pc which was built specially for WoW back then. Currently running Athlon X2 4400 and 7800 gtx and having a bit of hard time running most new games at decent res as you can imagine. (currently at 1600x1080)

I am trying to spend no more than £2k on this build since I am going to pair this pc with Dell U2711 (thats another £800-900). Mainly for games and intend to play all new games (not just WoW) at max settings. I do a bit of photo editing occasionally. Here is what I am thinking of:

Thought of getting HD5970 but I dont think I would really utilise the full power of it with just one U2711 (correct me if I am wrong!). Anyway I can always get a second HD5870 (or even a third) later if I do need more power.

Was really hoping to get the Asus P6X58D Premium Intel X58 as mobo but unfortunately it doesnt come with any of the OC bundle so had to settle for Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R. Is it worth getting the Asus mobo or is the Gigabyte board good enough?

Not sure whether the 750W power supply is suffice if I do decide to go crossfire 2x HD5870 in future?

Keeping the noise down is an important thing for me and hence why I picked water-cooling instead of air-cooling. I thought of using P193 instead of 800D but I was told that 800D is a more superior case in terms of build quality and ease to work with.

Any comments are welcome - I am most likely going to make the purchase next month so if there is something better that is worth waiting for then please let me know! (Think GTX 480 is coming out but not sure whether it is worth waiting?)

I can't see one thing wrong with that collection of parts.

The case is awesome.

That psu will cope with two 5870 no problems.

Gigabyte are excellent motherboards.

I'm pretty certain you don't want the crucial ssd, but am not currently clued up enough to say which is a good idea. I'm using a vertex from ages ago.

That Corsair case, much like the Silverstone TJ07, is very loved by watercoolers but doesn't make all that much sense for air. Unless you just think it's pretty, in which case fair enough.

Gigabyte boards are solid, and have a considerably better rma history than Asus, i.e. if your gigabyte board fails and you send it back to Gigabyte, you'll have a working one back within a week. Not so with Asus.

thanks guys.

Jon do you have any recommendations in terms of case if you think 800D isnt worth getting? I have had 3 cases in mind originally (coolermaster HAF932, P193 and 800D) and decided to go with 800D + watercooling. I have never OCed any of my pc before so this is the first time I am giving the OC a go!

Read some reviews on the crucial SSD and it is extremely fast with SATA III (would have loved to Raid 0 it but unfortunately I cant really justify spending extra £330 on that!)

The H50 fits most cases, as long as there's a 120mm exhaust near the cpu socket its likely to be fine. Out of those I'd go for the Antec P193 in a heartbeat, but that's personal preference to a large extent. The Antec P series are designed from the ground up to be quiet, the 800D and HAF932 are both aimed at high end air or custom water. Take a look through the case gallery on here and you should be able to work out what you'll like.

Ah, it's sata 6. That explains the price to some extent. I'm a bit surprised if it's quicker than the sata 2 interface, but really you want the storage forums for that. I'm a good 12 months out of date on ssds :)
