Hi Guys,

Decided to build a new PC for home. will be used mainly for gaming. SC2, Witcher, dota 2, WoW... most likely among others. I've got a few bits I can salvage from another PC

Bits I can salvage from old media PC:
Intel 330 Series 60GB SSD
1TB HDD
TeamGroup Elite 8GB DDR3 PC312800C11 1600MHz (2x4)

With that in mind... I've come up with this

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-SLI - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle **£12 Saving** £277.98
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - Red £161.99
1 x BeQuiet Pure Power L8 500W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply - With 120mm Silent Wing Fan Built in £49.99
1 x Antec GX500 Midi-Tower - Black £39.95
Total : £550.43 (includes shipping : £17.10 Ex.VAT).

Could anybody offer any advice/better options? I've not been keeping upto date with the latest hardware for a good year or so now...

Ideally I'd want to keep it to around £500-550. lower the better!

Cheers,
Indie

You're on the ball with your options. I would suggest that a 60GB SSD is too small and might warrant an upgrade, even if you have a dedicated storage drive (just partition the excess space on a larger SSD). The 1TB hard drive has only so many years it can work. If it's more than 4 years old, I'd suggest a new one to at least back-up data or use instead, since most HDDs last up to 5 years. Though newer models are built better and can have longer warranties, WD is known for good long warranties.

There is the Z97P-D3 board which is a little cheaper than the SLI board, and if you won't be using SLI in the future and don't have a massive need for the better sound and such, could save you a decent chunk of money

Only problem is I doubt it will be as good for overclocking. OP is looking to get a k chip either now or in the future, so along with a good CPU cooler he should be set for some decent overclocking :)

Possibly, but people such as pastymuncher got 4.4G on his B85 board/4670k so it can't be that bad as it'll likely be better for OC'ing than B85 :) May be wrong though

That's all fair and well and I am sure he has achieved that but the point of a better motherboard is they will have better power phases, meaning they will put under less pressure which will of course be better in the long run.

Stick to the SLI board bundle;)

Fair enough :)

Thanks for the options guys.

Any chance you could recommend a decent cooler? relatively cheapish....

Also, will the salvaged memory be okay? I remember it being quite cheap, but I think that may have been all the factories burnt down!

SSD Will probs be the first thing I upgrade, Only really using it to keep the costs right down atm, as budget is quite tight.

Something happened to the factories, a natural disaster I think but the prices are finally coming down to what they were 5 years ago :p

Most of the cheap coolers seem to be out of stock but this will do when in stock

YOUR BASKET
1 x Raijintek Themis Direct Contact CPU Cooler £19.99
Total : £25.97 (includes shipping : £4.98 Ex.VAT).

At 157mm tall will just fit into the case you're going with which allows 158mm coolers ;)

Microsoft.

But with a dollar sign to represent the price premium.

Ahaa, like it :)

Its got W7 on it at the moment with quite a bit of space.. I'll upgrade it later. I'm gutted i missed out on the Samsung SSD on the "today Only" sale. would have snapped that up!
