Build entire PC without CPU or be very boring and wait for CPU..?

I have all of my PC parts aside from my 9800X3D which is not arriving at the earliest until 10 Jan.

I dont return to work until 6 Jan so I would like to build the entire PC and do a lot of anal 'getting the wiring routes right' so it looks as nice as poss.

However this will leave me installing a 9800X3d into an AM5 X870 motherboard after its in the case. Does anyone feel very strongly that this is a terrible idea? I have heard the close pressure on the AM5 lever is pretty high and Im a bit nervous of ****** up the motherboard if I press that home with the mobo just on its standoffs.

Do folks install CPUs in AM5 mobos which are in the case all the time or is this heresy?

When installing the cpu just make sure the notches line up and the arrow is in the correct corner.

Check once, check twice and then check again.

I installed mine out of the case but this is because I didn't build the PC until I had everything but I cannot see it being an issue if you lay the PC down rather than trying to install the CPU with the PC standing upright.

Laying it down would stop the CPU from moving once you have it in place and move your hand away to secure it in place. I also got a contact frame for mine to stop the thermal paste going over the ihs due to the wired shape of it

Its probably easier to do it with the mobo outside the case especially if youre installing a big cooler. Perfectly possible tho with the mobo in the case just a bit tight. Deffo lie it down tho

Thanks @ED209 and @MeatLoaf, I will for sure be laying down the case for the CPU install and the GFX card will be out (Im only installing the GFX for fit check and setting up the anti sag bracket which comes with the LL EVO RGB)

Im not installing a big cooler, its a 360 AIO at top which I can fully prep ahead of the CPU going in.

The Lian Li O11d Evo RGB feels massive compared to my last case, so space doesnt seem an issue, soooo sounds like Im not doing something dumb then...

What I have done (I have the same problem) is I've re-cased my old motherboard/cpu/ram. So my old PC is running in a new case, new PSU, new wiring, new cooling. It's just waiting for the motherboard/cpu/ram, which I will buy all at the same time when the cpu is available, and assemble outside the case. The main advantage of doing this is that it allows me to test the fans, wiring, and cooling in advance.

It's slightly trickier installing the CPU with the build already inside the case. The risk of dropping the CPU and damaging the pins are low, but still higher than doing it outside of the case. Just be careful and you should be grand
