Build Gallery for Cy

I think a good solution is to have auto activating ear plugs whenever we are near our computers, we'll never need to worry about noise again! good luck withe the build mates.

Thank you Minato.

And yes, that sounds like a great idea... build them into some 5.1 headphones and you've got a winner product, I'll buy that.

*Quick Update*

I have just recieved the completed side panel from Nightkhaos and attached it to the case.
It looks a bit swish, if I do say so myself.

I have updated nighkhaos's gallery and added a preview picture in my first post above.

The next big step is on Monday when all the parts arrive, expect pictures :D

I agree, nicely done. How strong are the handles on the top of this case btw?

The gallery is a nice idea. You guys going to write up a complete build log of it?

The handles are actuall surprisingly strong, i usually carry the (pretty heavy) case around using them, no worries at all.

As for the build log, I think it would be a cool idea. I was planning to take a few pictures of the boxed/unboxed components, then the completed system, do you think anyone would be interested in a step-by-step of the actual build?

Its possible. We seem to get a lot of them from first time builders, but not as many from people who really know what theyre doing. Worst case scenario is you type it up and it gets ignored. I'm vaguely intending to do one for mine in the future.

Good news on the handles, Im glad theyre functional. I'm very fond of the wheels on mine as they make lifting it far easier

I would be very interested in seeing a step by step (with pics) of a build, particularly as I'm shortly going to undertake mine

I'm a bit hesitant about applying the Thermal Paste, too much, not enough etc...

Regards,

Andrew

We'll do our best to explain the thermal paste procedure for you then. :)

After consulting with my technical advisor, we have come up with a proceduce that Andi says works quite well for him. I recall seeing him and my friend Stuart using it when they were installing a TRUE on Stuart's Core 2 Duo. The procedure is outlined below:

After ensuring the CPU heatspreader is clean, apply a rice grain sized blob of thermal inferface material (TIM) on the heatspreader. Cover your finger in something plastic and clean such as a plastic sandwich bag. Then using your covered finger, spread out the blob of TIM into a thin, even layer accross the CPU heatspreader.

Most people do it in a different way, but we have found this method has worked very well for many computers.

We will be happy to take some photos of our own application of the TIM on the CPU heatspreader for instructive purposes, but you may have to wait a few days as we are still waiting for the last components to arrive.

I hope this helps you with your build!

Hi everyone,

Another quick update: I just received the bulk of the components (yay!).

I have updated the build gallery and posted a picture of it in my first post.

Hopefully should be putting it together in a couple of days - still waiting on some replacement parts from coolermaster.

Hi folks,

Pretty big update - I just built it :D

It all seems to work fine, windows 7 RC is installed - just putting on drivers now.

I have a few photos I took in this gallery (It takes less time than the other one), but I will also update nighkhaos's gallery and post an update picture on the first page.

I have to say, I'm blooming happy its done and working. Overclocking will probably come tomorrow, need to get some dinner now.

If anyone has any questions, please just shout out and I'll be happy to answer.

I'm a bit dissapointed guys. Maybe in part because thats the motherboard I want, but not only this. Not much of a build log certainly :)

Mainly though, cables and associated aesthetics. I was expecting perfection mind. What's the really thick one running vertically up the side of the case? It certainly looks like it goes over a hole at the bottom, and then another at the top so surely could be threaded behind the sheet. The esata bracket looks a lot like the cable can be fed behind the motherboard itself rather than draping across the system. Not much to do with fan wires short of braiding/wrapping in pvc tape, but why choose orange sata cables?

Looks aside, and I know the argument of cables impeding airflow is a thin one, yep, it's a computer. Quite nice hardware as I imagine your bank balance noticed. It'll run fast. how much space is there around the bottom intake? It looks like it might be a very nice place for a little radiator

Hope you're not too offended, my current system is largely caseless and features a desk fan so am in no place to criticise really. Cheers

edit: yeah, computers are female I think. Treat her badly and she leaks water, behaves unexpectedly and occasionally unreasonably, expensive to keep. Plus my missus is jealous of my one, and this adds credence to it being female :)

Thanks jon. For the moment the primary goal was to get it working, so we'll fix any lose cables later. As for the colour, it's a closed case build. I only care about airflow. If i was doing a window build I would pick better cables etc to make it prudy.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I was planning on making a computer not a work of art.

The 12V ATX cable was not the longest i'd ever seen and I was hesitant of putting any directly under the motherboard. As it is, not many cables impede airflow and it runs OK. The SATA cables are orange because...well, that's what came with the motherboard. If Nightkhoas wants some black ones then I'm sure he will get them in the future.

I'm sure I could have improved on the rest of the cable management (various cable extensions probably would have helped), but after getting back from work I could not justify to myself staying up all night sorting it out.

As it stands, its a full functional, very fast, rather loud PC - just as I hoped/expected, and I'm sure nighkhaos will be very happy with it. I'm sure when he embarks on phase 2 of the build (noctua fans, sound card, assorted noise reducing features, possibly water) he will have a truly uber PC.

Edit: The cable(s) that runs vertically were there when I got the case. It can't be threaded round the back because the clearance between the back sheet and the door is tiny, only small cables can be routed that way. I could have separated them and tried to route them - but the existing system did the job and would not be seen as the case door is always going to be one. I tried to go for the build log, but a bunch of the pictures I took ended up very blurry and I wasn't going back to step 17 or 84 to retake the photo. If anyone has any specific questions about putting it together, I'd be happy to answer them.

I am very hapy with it. But it's far from finished. This was just afterall the bulk build. Over the next few months I'll assess it and see what I want to make it quieter, and if anything like replacing SATA cables is in order. A computer is a long term project. It'll take me at least two weeks to max out the OC, then not to mention I may need to adjust that with the new fans!
