Apart from the usual Office type applications and the internet, I use my PC for editing video files (.mts) which I download from my HD camcorder. I tend to use Ulead Videostudio11 for the editing etc. I'm not a games player.

My current PC is getting a bit long in the tooth and I'm thinking about upgrading:-
1) Mobo
2) CPU
3) Memory
4) Graphics Card

I recently bought a couple of SATA HDD's as well as a DVD writer and I rather like my present case, don't want to change any of those as I see no need to.

What sort of spec should I be looking at? I'm not a professional or anything like that, but I would like to process edited videos a little quicker, some I have done recently took 5 hours to render, that seems a bit ridiculous to me.

I have already ordered Win7 btw, I would install that as a clean install with the new hardware.

put 8gb of ram in, which from reviews will benefit video editing.

six core cpu.

and I was thinking of suggesting a motherboard with built in gpu, but if any application you use can make use of CUDA, then the 9800gt(which is a low power version) can give a big boost in performance.

otherwise, drop the nvidia card, and swap the motherboard to - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-402-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782

Thanks for the reply Stulid. I'm wondering if that spec above is a bit too good for what I need!:D

Do I really need good RAM like you have specified? I hear what you say about the amount of RAM, just wondering if I really need such fast RAM.

I must confess that I didn't even look at AMD, I was considering a Gigabyte EP45T mobo and an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66Ghz.
