Build it or bundle - advice appreciated

I said I'd report back on my experience here for my first BYO PC. Built it all last night - did have a bit of a nightmare working out where all the cables went, but eventually got it to the stage where it powered up, all the fans running and looked OK.

However this morning when we left it on while trying to install the opsys, we smelled burning. Thought initially it was just because it's new, but eventually spotted a bit of smoke coming out and at the same time the PC shut itself down.

On investigation there's a cable that has melted. It had a label on it saying Ear Mic and with a 5-1 flat connector in the end. Have we completely screwed it up?

A cable melted? Blimey. Presumably way too much current was pumped through it and the plastic went rather than the whole cable melting. Was it plugged into the right slot? I assume it runs from the case to the motherboard?

Yes I mean the plastic and yes from the case to the motherboard. It has also melted the connector and fused it to another smaller connector. In the motherboard manual, in the system panel connector area, it had an area marked 'speaker' which was four pins with an adjacent blank. The manual said (from left to right) +5v, ground, ground, speaker. The connector said similar things but not in the same order. I sort of assumed that if it wasn't quite right it just wouldn't work.

OK given that I've done this, I need to find a solution. There are two cables/connectors that now need to be replaced. Firstly there is a cable with two wires, black and brown, with a little connector on the end which says Power; secondly there is this other cable with the connector described above which has a thicker black cable and the connector has a red, white and a green wire coming out + one other now unidenfiable. Both go to the front of the chassis. I haven't dismantled the chassis so can't see how they connect to the power button etc.

Do I a) go down the road to ******s and see if I can find the cable b) phone overclockers and see what they can do c) buy a new chassis.

I'm sorry to have to ask for this help but from what everyone said I thought I'd be able to manage this. Indeed I had got all the way there but one mistake has screwed things up.

Get the educational discount version of windows 7 if money is tight. You can still do a clean install with it ( Not just a upgrade) and it works out much cheaper.

If it's only the front panel audio, then it's not too bad. If you also damaged the case speaker, it's not too bad either. you can probably buy a little speaker thing, one came with my case iirc.

Talk to OcUK about this. I hope it didn't fry anything else, but you may be able to RMA the case and maybe the motherboard if it is damaged, or OcUK maybe able to provide you with parts to replace, but I would suspect it's RMA time. Could be that the speaker was defective and shorted the cables. Talk to them anyway.
