Build Problems

This weekend I've been building two computers for parents and sister. They are both almost Identicle except one of them I am using my old processor and my old graphics card from upgrading my own computer. The first compture went together fine and im typing from in now. The second which has my old bits in is causing problems.

When it turns on theres no signal going to the monitor. The graphics card seems to be fine as the fan on it is spinning and there is a red light on next to the PCI-E socket. I also stuck in back in my old computer and it ran fine from there. Everything else looks like its plugged in and working.

Anybody get any ideas of what other things can cause no signal to reach the monitor?

Thanks

Simon

Might be completely wrong in suggesting this but you never know.

Have you set the BIOS to use the GFX card rather than the onboard?

I have done it a few times myself, instead of using the GFX card it uses the I/O GFX connection

How would I go about doing that?

I've just been trying different things, switched CPU's over between the two comps and they are fine. Should the fan on the CPU always spin? In the comp which isnt working yet the fan doesnt start spinning, which It did in the other computer, don't know if thats jsut because it isnt under load?

Just checked, there isnt an onboard GFX.

The spec is

Gigabyte GA P35 DS3L
Inter Core 2 Duo E7200
ATI XT1800
Geil 2GB 800mhz Black Dragon

Could it be a motherboard problem? Although everything else seems to light up suggesting theres at least power going through it

It could be a motherboard problem if everything is working on another system. Additonally, I believe the CPU fan should always be spinning!

I'm really not the most experienced person on here but I would start disconnecting everything and plug it all in one by one and see if you get any changed results which could nail it down to something specific.

On another note you may want to wait until some brains on here show up and give you some pointers!

The other CPU is a Intel Core 2 DUO E6400 "LGA775 Allendale" according to that link it does seem like the mobo shouldnt support the other CPU on the current BIOS version however I switched them around into the working comp to test it and it worked fine in the other comp so not sure that is the problem?

I shall try different RAM although from previous experience if the RAM is faulty wouldnt you still expect something to come up on screen on boot? The RAM I have has two red lights on the sticks which are on, not that that necessary means they are working.

I have seen this kind of problem been caused by RAM in the past. The lights on the ram could just be to show they are seated properly and recieving power, although red is a poor choice as it is normally associated with something wrong.

Its a bit of a long shot but have you tried clearing the CMOS?

Its looking more and more like a Mobo problem.

I'll try some different RAM in it after work this evening and I can reset the CMOS. My feeling has been that it is a faulty motherboard seeing that the other almost identicle comp went together with no problems.

Thanks for the help
