Build your Own NAS

I am looking to build my own NAS, probably using freenas. I want as small a case as possible for this.
Ideally I am looking at a case able to store 5-8 hard drives. Does any1 have any suggestions?

Also what would you recommend for good 5-8 port raid controller?

I always thought a raid card was best as if the motherbaord dies you would lose everything but if a raid card died, simply replacing it would allow you to reconstruct the raid?

Seems brackets are the way forward then
