Building a new comp after being out of the game...

Some of you may have noticed my recent thread on laptops...

Well, after all that faffing about, I have decided against it, and want to return to the good old days of building my own PC!

Now, as I have been out of the game for so long, everything is above my head. I left just before the 64 bit developments, and all this duo stuff, so I am now very confused!!!

Now, I used to one day be a shuttle owner, and given I did want a laptop, size and looks is important. (as it is with eveything

)

So, I have already decided on a Lian Li case (unless anyone else has an intelligent suggestion)

But need to know what processor to get...

I may play games on it, like FPS (used to be a mega SOF2 player), and would love to start playing Call of Duty, etc again. So it will have to be relativrly high spec. I also plan to get a 19 inch monitor or something cool. Obviously getting hard disks is all quite straight forward, although I will be doing a hell of a lot of backing up (as I intend to copy my 1000 CD classical music collection...) So, what do you guys recommend, you are the experts!!!!

EDIT: I used to be an AMD nut, but with the core duo on the scene....

Case - Lian Li PC-A05B £77
Processor - Core Duo 2.4Ghz £148
Mobo - ?
GCard - ?
Hard Disk - Barracuda 320Gb £52
Corsair 2Gb 8500 - £117
Sound - Audigy Value 2 £32
PSU - Corsair do these now! Cool! Are they worth it?
DVDRW - The Best money can buy, so which one?
Fans - As quiet as possible?
Heatsink - No idea anymore...

Another thing, though, sound is important and I would like it as quiet as possible...

Mobo - Gigabyte DS3P
GCard - 8800GTS 320MB if you game above 1280 x 1024 you might want to think about the 640mb version
PSU - Corsair 520HX
DVDRW - Any will do, except Pioneer/HP
Heatsink - Noctua UHF12 or Tuniq Tower

Also, that GCard is going to hammer the hell out of my budget - I am not that big a gamer -- I just wouldn't mind being able to play the odd FPS.

I am starting to think that a gaming rig isn't the way forward... maybe I should do wha I always dreamed of...

A Silent, or at least very quiet PC, that can still handle the occasional game..

The specced parts above are very quiet indeed. The Corsair PSU is very very quiet for a PSU.

You can't hear the Noctua.

HDD will be loudest bit.

Pio 112D are one of the best burners out there. :eek:

Have burnt around 50 Verbatim DVD+R's with this thing, not one coaster. :eek:

Compared to my other NEC and Samsung drive, this one is a monster.

What performance difference will there be between a 1066 FSB Core Duo and the lower speed 800? (If I was looking to get price down and go for cheaper processor)

Also, if I am not a mega serious gamer, but may occasionaly want to play COD or something, surely I don't need two gfx cards?
