Building a new PC - Is it any good?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to build a new PC in the near future that i'll be using for gaming and video editing. I don't really know what to look for when browsing for components, but i've been researching a bit online and hopefully i've managed to pick out a fairly decent spec. Can you have a look through and see if my choices are any good though?

Monitor - Asus VE278H 27" LED LCD
Tower - Zalman Z11 Plus Mid Tower Case
Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (socket 1150) ATX
CPU - Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Socket 1151
CPU Fan - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 4
Graphics Card - MSI GTX 960 4GD5T OC, GEFORCE GTX 960, 4GB GDDR5
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 X 8GB) 2400MHz DDR4
Sound Card - ASUS STRIX SOAR
Primary Drive (SSD) - Toshiba 240GB Q300 SATA III
Secondary Drive (HDD) - Toshiba P300 2TB 3.5'' SATA High-Performance
Power Supply - Corsair CX 600W Fully Wired 80+ Bronze

I've already got a mouse and keyboard i'm planning to use, but other than that it's all from scratch. I'm not planning on playing the best of the best games at top settings or anything, just want something that I can play decent ones on and edit videos without worrying if my computer will melt or anything!

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

The motherboard and cpu are incompatible as they are different sockets. For a 6600k you want a Z170 motherboard. The psu is low end with cheap internals so you could do better there as well. I am sure Stulid or someone will be along soon and do you a good, more balanced build.

That's great, thanks for taking the time to put this together.

In terms of what Bradley1928 said above, would you recommend a full tower for this, or would a mid tower be alright?

^ That psu isn't very good as it has average voltage regulation and high ripple. No case either.

Here is my 2p worth:-

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £742.88
(includes shipping: £0.00)

The case is much better than the Zalman Z11 plus. The R9 380 is slightly better than the GTX 960 but unfortunately the lower priced 4GB cards are out of stock on here. The 850 Evo ssd is about as good as you can get at the moment. The motherboard has decent onboard sound do give it a try before splashing out on a sound card.

As for the psu, pick one of these and you can't really go wrong.

The Antec is a Seasonic built unit with 540w on a single 12v rail and a 5 year warranty. The downside is the hardwired cables.

The Superflower has a single 550w 12v rail and a 5 year warranty. The downside is that they have bright white leds where the cables plug in that cannot be turned off. That shouldn't be a issue in the Phanteks case though as the psu is boxed in.

The XFX is a Seasonic built unit with a single 540w 12v rail and also has a 5 year warranty.

Yes, 550w is more than enough for that build and even with overclocking will leave plenty of spare headroom.

Definitely a Midi, a full tower would be complete overkill unless you're planning on going 3 way sli with massive radiators any time soon. Just check the specs of the case you decide on to make sure there's clearance for the CPU cooler you choose, the rest would be fine.

Never seen any complaints about that PSU tbh, I just know to avoid the cheaper Corsair models as the reliability is shocking. It did say at the top of the post "Just add a case + monitor that suits" ;)

Thanks, I've just been doing a bit of looking and from what I can see there are a lot of recommendations for the NZXT Phantom 410. From what I can see it looks like there should be a decent clearance, and the review site I read said there was no issue with fitting in components

Taken from this review:-

Weaknesses:
• Average voltage regulation and AC ripple suppression
• Efficiency drops off at full load (at elevated operating temperature)
• Use of Teapo 85°C electrolytic capacitor
• 3-Year warranty

FSP are rather hit or miss as a oem and their units do tend to suffer from ripple for some reason. There are far better psu's available for a similar price so I don't see why anybody should settle for a mediocre unit.
