Building a new PC - Kaby Lake 7600K or Skylake 6600K?

If RYZEN disappoints, the focus will shift to Cannonlake, i.e. "Should I splash out on Kaby Lake or wait for Cannonlake later this year?".

It's a blessing and a curse that technology evolves so quickly.:(

Released quickly :o not sure about evolves quickly, well not with Intel anyway :p

Fair point - Intel haven't exactly been tripping over their feet to release revolutionary new CPUs. :)

It's just a bit depressing to buy a top-of-the-line camera or a new high-end GPU, and lo and behold, a couple of months later your tech is old hat and you end up with a severe case of gadget envy. But that's the name of the game I guess...

There's a big difference between waiting a month or two for the biggest CPU release in years versus waiting at least a year (Cannonlake is slated for 2018) for a release that there's no reason to be excited about in the first place.

Again, ironically this statement is only accurate with AMD's offerings (Lack of?).
AMD have neither released or evolved.

Perhaps Ryzen will change that, but up till now these sort of statements are only applicable to AMD.

Apparently Intel are now saying "before the end of 2017" but yeah, I take your point.

Quote:
"Intel CEO Brian Krzanich has confirmed on stage at CES 2017 that its new 10nm (nanometre) “Cannon Lake” architecture will debut before the end of 2017."

Eh. It still seems unlikely AMD are going to be *really* close to Intel, and I dont see why it's so 'obvious' that they'll be much better value. £220-240 for a modern i5 is probably one of the best value items you can apply to your build given the longevity it'll give you. I'd gladly pay an extra £50 for better performance for the next 3-5 years. Breaks down to £10-15 per year more, really. Totally worth it.

Anyways OP, go with 7600k. General IPC gains aren't much, but Kaby Lakes are apparently better overclockers than Skylake. Plus, each new generation of Intel CPU seems underwhelming on release, but then when you look back, you tend to see that there were meaningful gains being made from one to the next, especially when you look at frametiming/performance consistency.

Why do you think it won't? There's no reason to think that, but every reason to think it's possible... after all, AMD are capable and above all, they NEED Ryzen to succeed or they're pretty much buried and Intel will continue to dominate and control pricing. Despite acknowledging Intel are making no gains, you seem to want to give them money anyway, while at the same time writing AMD off before they've even had a chance... I've no idea why?

While I don't think Ryzen will flop, your post could have been applied to before Bulldozers launch.

It could have done, but now is now, then is then... history may repeat itself, it may not. We just don't know yet. They can't be written off based on what happened years ago.
