Hi,
I'm looking to build a new PC this week, and was wanting to use my current retail Windows 7 on the new machine..

Am I right in thinking I'll have thirty days of grace before I'll need to activate my new machine so I'll be able to use both (not simultaneously) in that time, so I'll have a month to move all my data across etc.?

Is there anything I've got to worry about...i.e. using my copy of Windows 7 on a totally new machine and discarding the old is perfectly feasible, right?

Thanks for any advice!

Yep you will get 30 days trial.

If your Windows 7 key is OEM (purchased with the computer), you may not be able to activate it on the new machine.

Thanks. I did read about a requirement for a new copy of Windows 7 if you replaced the motherboard, which sounded well over the top to me and quite immoral. We'll see what happens when I phone them to activate my new machine!

You mentioned you have the retail version of Windows, if so it will activate fine either online or at worst through the automated phone system.

most keys can be used multi times, it's only when you go near or over 25 times they get locked, even then a phone call and 9 out of 10 times your sorted and good to go
