Building a path/pad help

Wanted to add pictures but the misses has my camera so i'll try and explain.

I am making a concrete pad down the side of the house. So far I have created a frame work using gravel board and filled the area full or hardcore (bricks and crap)

Now I am not sure where to go next, should I get small gravel to fill the gaps between the hardcore or should I just get a ton of sharp sand mix cement and just pore it down and let it fill the gaps?

I like the idea of gravel, just worried about cost. Am thinking get a ton of rough sand, and maybe add some gravel to it in a cement mixer.
