Wanted to add pictures but the misses has my camera so i'll try and explain.

I am making a concrete pad down the side of the house. So far I have created a frame work using gravel board and filled the area full or hardcore (bricks and crap)

Now I am not sure where to go next, should I get small gravel to fill the gaps between the hardcore or should I just get a ton of sharp sand mix cement and just pore it down and let it fill the gaps?

Pretty sure its just cement over the whole lot....

I remember when my dad put one down the end of the garden and I don't remember him putting gravel down first, just straight on top of the hardcore...

Yeah its hardcore then cement over that. But before you do that you need to have made sure that the hardcore is well and truly a good base, rammer or just an old fashioned lump hammer will work.
Check the mix of cement vs aggregate, oh and the type of aggregate as well. You probably want a mixture of sand and shingle.
If you need a decent amount best bet is ring a local aggregate supplier get their advice on depth and what type and get them to deliver it.

If you can take the extra time, go for the small mixed gravel over it all and then compact it down. Might take the extra time, but worth it in the long run.
Go with limestone mix if you can, as this turns hard with water :)

I like the idea of gravel, just worried about cost. Am thinking get a ton of rough sand, and maybe add some gravel to it in a cement mixer.

Cheers for the help so far need to get myself organised as its my project for monday

Don't forget to slope it slightly away from the house or sloped towards a drain/soak away, you don't want standing water against your brick work.
