i have a spare pc here its a p4 dell and want to turn it into a file server to put on the home network.

now my dilemma is do i use freenas or just use XP for this task?

i have both at my disposal

my only worry about xp as a file server is would i need to put on an antivirus?

currently using IPCOP as a firewall/router on an old pc which is running sweeet!

file server will have videos, photos, music

any advice?

thanks!

Any Base Server OS would be grand and no need for AV (I havent used one in years). Personally i would not use XP as a server base but a Linux distro, much better for sharing as you can setup full QOS support via samba.

I have an old machine filled with drives running FreeNAS at the moment, its been very stable (infact I've never actually rebooted it) and the interface is dead easy to use.

i just installed freenas, running sweet and pretty easy to set up

i first used openfiler and wow was that overkill for my needs!
