Building a wooden computer case, good idea or crazy?

(...just another rethink of the ducting idea)

move HD fan further into duct so it's next to HD's
move the PSU further back into box

remove both PSU fans and the metal cover of the PSU.

use the HD fan to cool both the HD and the PSU
(additional heat load from HD's should be low enough)

line the exit tube from the PSU with sound absorbing material,
this will reduce the exit noise of the fans air flow

based on the idea that air flow in a "tube" doesn't require a fan at both ends, as it's only going to flow one way.
I guess the fan will need to push v.slightly more c.f.m to counteract the increased sidewall friction of the sound absorbtion material and the PSU.

+ moving the fan (further) inboard removes the reflected blade noise
+ removes 2 fans from the noise total
.

I'm thinking of making a wooden case too; but I was thinking of starting with a very cheap standard case, removing all the panels (leaving just the carcass) and then attaching wooden panels on each side. I was thinking about using plywood as the layered effect looks good (and it's considerably cheaper than using solid wood!). With a slot loading DVD and some wooden buttons / knobs for power and fan controls it should look pretty... interesting.

Probbaly only a pipe dream at the moment though

Here ya go , Danger Den does them!! i don;t think i can post the full link as it's a DD shop/webstore thing

I've been working on a 1/2 wood pc system for quite a few weeks now, the lower section is mdf spray painted black with a perspex cover to add luster and shine, the upper section is a normal silver and black case. The lower section has been designed to hold a watercooling system. Its not finished yet but its getting there:)
