Is it possible to make a small second income building PCs and selling online?

Has anyone done this before or currently doing to now and what sort of money have you ben making?

Cheers

Spie will crush you.

Edit - You do realize you are basically asking for help on opening a direct compeditor to OcUK on OcUK's forum?

I've always thought about it because I love building computers - but it's always seemed to risky to me...

Anything is possible, however making money in this way isn't easy.

For those who don't buy off the shelf PC's there's always someone they know who can build one for them if they can't do it themselves. Plus you have all the issues with warranty replacement etc.

I used to do this years ago and turned a small income. However, I don't do this now as there's all the hassle but less profit.

Theres not that money in it for new startups to be honest, who will you build for?

John Smith doesnt need anything flash, a lot of peoples are steering towards laptops now too as they are cheap as chips.
If you're going after the gamers/enthusiast market you're going in direct competition with the people who are supplying you with the parts, which means profit margins are terrible.
And thats assuming said gamer/enthusiast isnt bright enough to put everything in the colour coordinated slots. Building PCs is hardly rocket science, dont expect to get a decent income from it. Its probably a less skilled job than working in fast food.

You need to think "Why would someone buy from me?" These day's the big brand PC makers' prices are already so low. If you spec yourself a machine from say OCUK, the price will be very close to a prebuilt system from ****. The margins will be way too thin.

Unless you get wholesale hardware prices direct from ATI/Intel etc, it's not worth it.

No money in it simply because big companys will sell a pc for less than you can buy the parts and they will offer a warranty etc etc.

Doubtful youd make any money from it. Maybe do a built to order type thing. There are so many people doing it online, you'd be better putting an ad in the local paper or leaflet drop.

I don’t think me making one or maybe two machines a month is going to worry OcUK. They would still be gaining from the purchase of component parts.

You've failed twice there.

One or two a Month is quite optimistic.

And to make any real money you'd have to buy bargain basement components that OcUK don't really sell.

So you want to buy full retail price components and expect to make a 2nd income from building a machine or two per month?

The money is in the support not the hardware unless you are selling lots like ocuk.

You will also find you are competing with people who put pirated windows and office on for free, and so to the end user who does not care, is significantly cheaper then you! .... "being legit" means nothing to the majority of people it its going to cost them 170+ quid for windows and office.
