Building Computers

tbh its quite easy, i didnt have a clue at first but just read up on it, first ever build had no problems, actually pretty easy, then i did a full case transfer and that was pretty easy just took quite a long time.

Havent done anything since then but if i ever do a big upgrade or a new build again i reckon it should be pretty easy.

I think the only way you could get into it professionally (sounds like an awesome job!!!) would be to start your own custom computer company.

I'd love to do something like that.

Either that, or get a good name in the reviewing industry and earn/build by doing really good reviews, very professionally, about PC hardware etc. Which also sounds awesome.

I bet it wasn't, and I bet it didn't ;)

There was never a 200MHz PII, and RA2 was a fair bit later than the PII and needed a fair bit more umph ;)

it deffo ran on my p2 233mhz pc.

and it did run on the one i built which was a cpu of some sort slower than the above. ra2 minimum requirements was a 266mhz cpu, still remember it lol

God how I miss the days where you actually had to know what you were doing :(

Manually setting IRQ and DMA addressing, none of this plug and play cheating malarky ;)

Getting the machine to boot into DOS and having to configure EMS so you could address your 4MB of RAM, loading things into HiMEM and LoMEM.

Those were the days...

/nostalgia.

and good riddens! lmao

evolution is the way things get better (well hopefully) :D

You mean "Command & Conquer - Red Alert", the first 1 was just called "Command & Conquer". I ran "Command & Conquer - Red Alert" on my AMD PR133, back in 97 or 98 in windows95:D

As mentioned before, buy some parts and build it yourself. You can always ask on the forums if you don't understand or are cautious about something.

I was in your position about a year ago - I wanted to build my own PC but didn't have a clue how.. It was then after a few months on here that I picked up the courage and ordered about 1k worth of components. As you can imagine I was a bit sceptical as i'd never built a pc before!

The guys at OCUK helped me with anything that I didn't understand and to be perfectly honest it's a lot simpler than you may first imagine. I say just give it a go and you will definitely learn from it :)

Handy thread this, was thinking along the same lines tbh, im speccing myself a system to build atm, but saving for a wedding too puts a dampner on things!!!!

People want cheap computers and there's no margin to be made in cheap anything. The only way to make a margin therefore is to build shedloads like Dell/HP. The smaller players are having to fight in ever smaller niches and subsidising their sales with selling components via the web. The big players can get the corporate accounts and that's a very different beast from the computers we all use at home.

Seriously, anyone thinking about a business model based on building PCs for discerning customers needs their head examined. There simply is no market.

Building one for yourself is another story and a fun hobby - but it's not something you can make money out of.
