building gaming pc

AM2 is common. I don't think you should be looking at AM2 since you have the budget to get a conroe. I'd say wait for conroe to be more common and there motherboards to be common.

I have a 9700 AGP graphics card and thats fine for the games i play like CS source on low settings. If your having problems with games or want them to run on full settings then get a new graphics card. I'm going to wait but thats mainly because of the expense from going AGP to PCI-E

im sorry i must seem like a noob now, but i havent been in the computer hardware stuff for about a year and a half now.. whats a conroe? is it a new type of amd or intel platform?

Conroe aka Core 2 Duo is Intel's just released new cpu, its slowest chip the 6300 is known to keep up with the top AMD offerings, which is a huge saving.

If you did upgrade, it makes sense to buy a conroe over the other systems suggested.

Alternatively you could get a PCI-E mobo, £70 max, another gig or ram £70 max, and grab an x1800xt for about £140 - £150. I make that a £300 max upgrade that should see a good boost in gaming.

Really its down to you, do you want to spend more or less?.....

Right guys this is it, the 3 systems, what do you recommend going for? bear in mind i am like 19 and i know i could spend up to 1000 on upgrading, i dont neccessarily want to unless performances would be blisteringly faster. i dont neccessarily think any of these systems would be slow / much slower than the other, whats the new conroe proccessors like? good for gamnig? as amd used to always have the ballpark there!

That conroe system would absolutely wipe the floor with the other 2. I wouldn't personally spend so much on the ram though. I'd personally recommend getting GSkill NR 6400 ram. Thats like a £100+ saving. It may be worth your while waiting a month or so until you can really sus out what motherboard is best to go for.

Also, if direct x 10 cards from Nvidia are out fairly soon it may be worth waiting to see what the price drops are like.

you gotta be retarded to buy an am2 / 939 over a conroe setup.

Wait for dx10 cards and decent conroe mobo's (rd600) its not like your current setup is bad.
