Building my first computer, need some/a lot of guidence...

Hi guys, I'm building a new computer as my current computer's graphics card has died and it seems like a sign that I should upgrade. I've wanted to upgrade for a while anyway...

My budget is between £600 and £700
I already have a full HD monitor, mouse and keyboard (May replace the keyboard as it's getting a bit old) I also have a DVD drive so these are not included in my budget.

The system will be mainly used for watching films, browsing the internet, some amateur video editing and light gaming for example Command & conquer and when it's released Star wars The Old Republic.

One thing I would like to incorporate into the system is a SSD of 60-80GB as that's all I'd need.

Any and all help would be awesome, thanks in advance. :)

My brother actually has a MSI ATI Radeon HD 5850 Twin FrozR II 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card that won't work in his system (Due to the power supply) So I said I'd give him £60 for it and use the money I'm saving from buying a new one and perhaps get a better case?

I do need a operating system but as I'm at college I can get Windows 7 for about £40 but I'm not bothered about this being in my budget.
 
I need to buy the computer ASAP as I need it for college work. I was going to install windows on the SSD for a quick start up. If I buy the SSD later would I be able to more the OS onto the SSD without having to uninstal it all?
 
As above really, the spec by RJC is spot on. You could easily buy a system now, install Windows on a traditional hard drive for now. Pick up one of the new generation SSDs when their released. As they're expected fairly soon, you won't have too much to back up then do a fresh install on the new SSD.
 
All my files are on my old hard drive at the moment anyway.

Would I be right in thinking I'd just have to un-install windows and re-install it on the SSD drive when I get it?
 
Yes, remove the old drive install the new SSD and load windows, format old hard drive once your up and running on the SSD.
 
yep,

enter bios and enable AHCI within the SATA controller

install windows on the SSD, while the harddrive is unplugged, then when its done/drivers installed, plug the harddrive in and format it and use it for storage.

disable disk defrag for the SSD too.
 
Kind of, Back up and files/data you need. Unplug and remove existing hard drive. Attach SSD and install Windows 7. Once all installed on the SSD, in the BIOS ensure SSD is 1st in boot priority. Than attach existing old hard drive and format it. Windows as such doesn't need uninstalling. This way, nice fresh Windows installation on SSD and use existing hard drive for storage of documents etc.

Awesome, I'll have to do some banking and hopefully should have my new computer by the end of the week :)

I'll make sure to get a nice cheap SSD when the new ones come out.
