Building my first PC

oh, I've read about that, I was going to ask about that next xD - How do I work out how much I need? ^^

That kind of depends on the budget, but also if you spend everything on a fast graphics card and get a slow CPU then you cause a bottleneck, where the fast graphics card is being starved of data, your trying to achieve a great balance.

" it's expected for the CPUs to have upto 8 cores with 16 threads"
I take it thats good then? ;P

Kind off, but for gaming currently a quad core CPU is all you need, that why if you compare a i5 2500K vs a i7 2600K using the Anandtech benchs, you will see minimal increases in gaming performance, the Hyperthreading that the i7 2600K has doesnt do much.

I'm taking it too much power will damage the components then? D;
Is there any difference on the brand or type of PSU? :)
Or is the only thing that matters is the voltage?

and right, I'll stick with Sandybridge then ^^

Too much power wont affect anything, the PSU will only pull out of the power socket on the wall what all the components need.

What can affect components is cheap poor quality PSU's with huge ripple in the voltages and also voltages that drop out of the ± % allowed by the ATX spec.

A lot of the brands (such as Antec, XFX, Corsair) actually source there PSU's from a OEM supplier called Seasonic who have a great reputation for making quality units.

A cheap PSU, even if the label on it says 700w etc, will actually struggle to output this value compared to a reputable brand.

OEM?

Thanks for letting me know, thats cleared a lot up ^^
By using a bigger screen, does that mean I will get more space (such as more icons on the desktop or an increased range of vision on games?) or are the 'images' just stretched instead?

OEM is Original equipment manufacturer, the original company that designed and built an item which some other company has put a sticker on and their own packaging.

its the higher resolution that gives more screen space, a 24" and 27" monitor of the same resolution have the same screen space, the pixels are just a bit bigger, so the icons on screen are just a bit bigger.

Ah, thanks a lot dude, you have been a great help once again. :)
+50 internets for you my good man ;p
How long have you been building PCs?

<------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> that long.

But seriously, theres plenty of tech sites out there that reviews stuff and explains stuff well, so apart from building pc's for along time, there is loads of info to learn out there.

lmao ;p
yeah, I just dont come across most of them (plus the PS3 browser isn't all that good so I don't really try often)
Those spec you wrote earlier - will everything fit inside the case? or is that something you have not tested? just curious cause I just read a review which mentioned it being slightly small.

Oh and one more thing, does overclocking make the warranty void?

Everything fits inside without issue, its a normal Mid Tower ATX size.

And will accept a really long graphics card like a ATi 5990 which is two gpus on one card and is really big.

They cant tell, and if you bought a OCUK overclocked bundle its warrantied.

Erm, ATX?
I'm guessing GPU is GRAPHICAL PROCESSING UNIT :)
and ah, are ATI cards better than Nvidia?

atx is advanced technologies extended.

its a set of rules to govern size.

ATX is normal size.

M ATX is smaller.

there's a couple more as well.

as for the ATI vs NVIDIA debate, that's a chapter unto itself.

I think, technically, yes. But they have no way of knowing whether you did or not.

Unless you go for a crazy overclock which burns out the chip leaving burn marks or something.

Ah thanks,

One last thing....
Why does everyone have black and white 'classical' display pics???? O_O'

It's like a ranking system dependant on your post number.

Each rank has it's own picture.

Check them all out here.

You should have a look around the FAQ for other info/rules too (such as the rule to not to mention or link to any competitors, which a lot of new people don't realise)

Make sure to come back for a re-spec before you go and buy anything though:)
