Hi all,

I'm just looking to seek some advice on building my first PC. I'm looking to build something which is brilliant for gaming and productivity.

I'm looking to spend between £2000-£3000.

I know this is a very sparse post, but would someone be able to suggest a basic build? I've done so much research on Intel V AMD, and now I just feel like I'm torn between the two. Is Ryzen 9 or Intel Core i9 a better pick, or maybe is a different series better for me?

I know GPU are golden right now so I plan to order everything else and then pick up the GPU another time. I'm in no rush to build the PC and I could purchase a pre-built PC however I do want the challenge of building it myself.

Look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,

Joe

I'd probably try and get the GPU first then order everything else since by the time you get the card availability on the 12/16 core CPUs and may have improved.

With that budget and the fact you're not in a rush, I'd certainly wait for next gen from Intel or AMD.

Some advice, read read and read some more. Don't be afraid to use well known auction sites for good deals too.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy.

Thank you both for your advice, much appreciated!

You should try and get a gpu like a 3080 or 6800xt which will do you well for 4k gaming and then build.

On the flip side you could build now add a cheap gpu to tide you over.

Thanks Micky for your advice. Am I right in thinking a 3090 would be overkill and better off getting a 3080?

Probably for most gamers its overkill, the 3090 is between 10 to 15% faster at 4k but read some reviews. Dont discount AMD gpus they are often slighhly faster but slower when ray tracing enabled.

Sign up for notifications on websites for stock alerts for the gpu.

If you'd like a pc quicker, use sites like OCUK and go to the pre-built section and order like that. Build systems get theirt own GPU stock and you can get a card quicker that way.

It all depends on how you value the building process.

My brother went to a competitor and dropped £3k+ on a custom system with a 5950X and 3080 Strix and got the system just a few weeks later (back in January).

Something to keep in mind is that current Intel chips (Comet Lake) do not support PCIE4, but AMD Zen3 chips do.

The next chips Intel release (Rocket Lake) are reported to support PCIE4.

I think at this point, it's probably better to have your new machine support this - so if Intel floats your boat, wait for Rocket Lake (March 30th), or if you're absolutely itching to buy right now, go with AMD.

There is rumor of a Nvidia 3080ti coming out in April. If your not in a rush to buy it might be worth waiting until the end of April to see if it is launched and how the intel 11th gen reviews. The 3090 isn't that much faster but has more memory, the 3080ti if released might have abit more memory and be slightly faster than the 3080.
